    Default The Generals

Just out of curiosity, do you prefer to use your City-Governors to govern your cities, or lead your armies to glory?
Personally; I use my City-Governors to lead my armies in the field, and my family members to govern cities. Typically, I will have one or two very well groomed family members take the field if the campaign is vital (or desperate) enough.

I may be the only one, but I made the governors a bit more potent in battle (family members too) by adding a few more numbers to their ranks. Also, by switching up the soldiers used, I made them a bit more useful. Syracuse and Greece both have the Royal Guard hoplites as their governor guards. And Carthage has the Sacred Band.

More than once I have seen my governors turn the tide in a dire situation on the field.

that's a nice idea, I never liked the governers in battle because of their low numbers. Though I use my family members a lot. Faction Leader and Heir are always on the front (if they have enough stars) otherwise they'll be governing a city

I always use either gov-gen or "trained" generals for my armies. IF a family member has good enough stats i use him as a gen, but fam is usually a Governor.

I micro-manage their ancillary characters a lot! I use family members as Generals until they get to 40 or so unless they have good management or influence stats then they govern. If I have a gov-general who has good command stats, I'll swap his characters with a general who doesn't. I just prefer having a general with a cavalry escort, if they need to turn the tide somewhere on the field, they can get there quicker.

I like to leave family members in a city with an academy or better until they are 20-21, then send them out with another general (unless they have good command stats in which case they get their own stack) to get experience, or if they end up getting good mgt/influence they go to manage a settlement.

And if you get a really bad governor/general who just has bad stats, well they get sent to fight on the frontier until they improve or die trying

I try to use the family as generals as much as I can. Trained governors deal with settlements because when your empire expands you will not have enough family members to deal with all your provinces. Plus your family members should be the ones who make the name for the empire. We would have never heard of Caesar, Hannibal or Alexander if they would have stayed at home and sipped wine!

For me, governors remain governors, that's why I employ them. However, that is in some occasions a shame because some governors have really good military traits once they appear, with two or three stars, for example. I do not like them so much as generals in battle because they have only a small "body guard" and are not so mobile as they fight on foot. Of course, I would use them in case a city is besieged or there is a nearby enemy army I can defeat with the troops in the city and no relieve army nearby.
