    Default protectorates

This has probably been answered before but I couldn't find it. Are protectorates worth it strategically?

I attacked UP and after beating them in a siege they begged for peace and offered to become a protectorate. I accepted but now seem to have to sit there with an army to keep others from attacking them. So is having protectorates worth it?

You can probably find some posts with diplomatic details, etc for protectorates with a quick search.

I would say that protectorates are worth it for the extra income and what you save in reputation from not having to destroy a faction/nation. However, keep in mind that it is your pledge to protect them, and not the other way around.

By having a protectorate I believe you get a certain percentage of their nation's income added to your own. It is a very useful feature in Empire.

yes but the computer can ask you to become a protectorate and you cant ask another faction to become a protectorate it makes no sense.

Yes you can. Sometimes there are factors that won't allow you to ask another nation. I haven't figured this out yet but sometimes you can ask, sometimes you can't. If they are already a protectorate of another nation...obviously you can't ask. And you can't ask major nations to become your protectorate. I think if your relations with that nation are "indifferent" or better and they are a minor nation, you can request it.

They have to be in a really weak situation, like having only one province.

It still takes a lot of work to get a nation to become your protectorate. There is, however, one method that takes minimal time and money:

Step 1: Eliminate the faction. As in, occupy every one of their provinces.

Step 2: Let the former faction's home province revolt.

Step 3: Allow the rebel army to take over its old capital. This will lead to that nation re-emerging.

Step 4: Lay siege to their capital immediately...with a small-enough force that they will sally out to attack you on the next turn, but large enough to defeat them.

Step 5: Face their army manually, and destroy almost all of their army. You don't want to utterly destroy them, as that would simply eradicate that faction again. Your objective is to make their remaining army pitifully weak (like one or two badly ravaged militia units), but still alive.

Step 6: They will usually ask for peace the next turn. Sometimes they will outright ask to become your protectorate. If not, make them a sweet deal (their old provinces back, some cash and technology, a trade deal, etc.) along with your protectorate request, and you will almost always get it. It also helps to have one or two additional full-stack armies in the area (not near the battle, but in the province); this factors into the AI's assessment of your military superiority.

    Good luck!

There is no other things needed to ask protectorate than that they have to have only 1 province. It's little stupid especially factions who have 1 main province as a capital and another little province somewhere else (like Venice), but I think we can live with that... And to get protectorate just destroy all their armies and siege their last settlement and they always agree. And when you get new protectorate and you want to get some profit from it you sometimes have to put little invest to them because AI usually can't use their money right with armies and then they are sometimes broke after war...

You can only ask a nation to become your protectorate if they only have one province. It's that simple.

It's advisable to not make major factions your protectorates as they have victory conditions to meet too and will probably declare war on you sooner or later.

Otherwise protectorates can be very useful. You get half their income, don't have to have a stack occupy it for a long time to quell unrest, and sometimes they can keep your enemies busy. It's always good to keep Malta around because they keep the Barbary Pirates in check somewhat. Also remember that protectorate provinces count towards your victory conditions

I haven't gotten a single protectorate ever since the patches came around. I used to sell my military access for protectorates xD

The only nation I ever got to be my protectorate was sweden, who then later attacked me.... Great.... I beat them and made them my protectorate again, and they attacked me, again... Finally I just gave up and killed them off. If ever nation ends up being like that, then it's absolutely not worth it...
