I remember hearing in a discription of the Marian Reforms that you cannot recruit Pedites Extraordinarii after the Reforms. But I haven't gotten to the Marian Reforms before, so not sure.
NOOOOO!!!

You don't get the equites extordinarii either.
On a sort of related note, what type of infantry would Roma's allied field during the Social Wars around 93-88 B.C? Would it be the sort of antiquated type represented during the Camillan and Polybian eras of EB (eg Samnite Spearmen, Pezhoi Bruttii, Pedites Extraordinarii and Lucanian Light Infantry) or a more legion/maniple orientated structure of lines and principes and hastati and triarii?
What's the big deal about them? True, they look cool and are basically pilum-and-kopis armed Triarii, but still? Unless half of your infantry are extraordinarii(I don't do it, 'cuz that's ridiculous), they aren't so much better. I'd rather have phalanxed triarii sa my third line.
And the reason you can't have them after the Marian reforms is because you can recruit the reformed cohorts, the evocati and the rest of the bunch. Add siege weapons for good measure.
They are excellent assault infantry (especially for manning siege towers or ladders and leading a charge through a breach in the walls), even better than the other Roman guys. Plus Romans hardly get any AP melee weapon on their infantry, so they fill that niche a bit. Also, their voice is awesome (same for the mounted variety).
pedites extraordinarii make excellent shock troops, especially when they're in reserve behind the manipular checkerboard formation that can react quickly to flanking maneuvers. I find them especially useful against phalanx type troops. They have the huge shields and the armour to hold the phalanx while they edge around and hack them to bits with their AP kopis.
I love them, I always keep 2 units of them in my main armies.
