Default Suicidal Generals (not just Varus)

    Hello all!

First off this is bar-none the best mod I have ever played for any game. It is better than the original game, just an outstanding work of art all around.

There seems to be a bit of a problem, not sure if it's with Roma Surrectum, or with the RTW core, but my generals (under AI command as reinforcements) just keep charging into phalanx walls head on and dying. I've had this happen at least 10-15 times in the space of about 30 battles. The AI commanded general will just kill himself in the beginning, it's like the AI is laughing in my face...

I have also noticed that calvary won't follow orders sometimes and will charge random units. I play as Germania mostly, and the mounted elites/barbarian nobles/generals seem to charge random units that are close by, not the units that I order them to charge.

Thank you for reading! Hopefully someone can talk to the AI and tell it to cut the malarky.

Keep up the artful piece of exceptional greatness you are working on.

The generals just charging straight in, in a suicide attack will be a problem with the original rtw that cant be changed.

I believe barbarian units have a trait, something like impetuous or something like that, i cant remember exactly, but they may charge random units because of a trait like that.

It's because they're trying to inspire their men by setting an example of bravery and courage. Instead, the only example they set is that of incompetence and stupidity. That's why it's always fun to see the enemy clamor and hold their heads when they see their general rush toward your formation, only to get plastered with arrows and javelins as a reward for his so-called heroics.

To quote Zoe from Serenity, "You know what the definition of a hero is? Someone who gets other people killed."

General Brittanicus is right, most barbarian units have "may charge without orders" trait which is pretty self-explanatory.

As for AI,I've seen it do some crazy stuff and i think that's from RTW.

ive seen an Ai general unit flank me an actually killed my general and fled the battle field using a tactical retreat
the ratio was 3:1 a pretty smart move for an AI xD

It might be bcos you have your cavalry in 1 group and order to attack 1 unit with all group that might cause some of the units charge random units.

Before the battle, take the general of the supporting army out - works like a charm!

That's what I do. Its sad watching your faction leader garrisoned inside a city be sent out under the AI to his death.

OK I am not sure what to tell you on the Generals heroic/stupid sacrifices but the cavalry problem is not just with barbarians. Cavalry always drives me nuts! Sometimes you will point them to attack an enemy where its vital and they will rush the spear units that just happen to be closer then the targeted unit, it is so annoying that you always have to keep an eye out for them. One of the things I do if I see that there is an enemy unit close by and there is a chance that my cavalry are morons, instead of clicking them to attack a unit I send them close in and when they are near by then I order to attack. If that makes sence.

BTW its not only cavalry that does that. Next time your infantry is chasing a rioting unit try to order them to attack a different unit, they will not listen! Instead they will stop for a second and then start chasing after the same rioting unit. You need to order them back and only then to attack. Its really frustrating. Otherwise just tell them to "Stand Their Ground"so they dont go off chasing after cowards!
