    Default Help with selecting heirs

Hi, I just got EB a few days ago and I need some help with something.

For factions such as Egypt, who are Monarchies, I like to select a son of the faction leader as the heir (usually the first born). But for factions such as Rome or Carthage, who have senates, I simply select the best, whoever I deem best suited by ability.

And Im wondering how the different factions selected their heir historically so I know how I should chose heirs when playing as those factions.

When i play with Rome or Carthage, i never change the heirs. I just ignore the feature, since there was no such thing as an heir. The closest would be Conslus and Sophets, but those two offices weren't permanent.

As i know, the monarchies and most tribes usually had the firstborn inherit the kingdom, unless there was compeling evidence against it. If someone alse wanted the throne ( a "better" brother or relative) civil war usually began

Unless it was something drastic like "first-born rises against father, makes half the territory rise in revolt and then serves mentioned territory to daddy's mortal enemy on a silver plate" eastern monarchies tended to go dynastic, with the eldest son of the ruler taking the crown. The west took a more democratic approach, with the Gauls and Germans reportedly choosing their next king by vote. I admit I'm quite ignorant about the practice among the Iberians, but it should go dynastic in general. Still, the factions of Lusotania(sp?), Arverni and Aedui are just a "what if" scenario of Mini-empires. Historically the tribes of Gaul were divided and AFAIK the only time they acted as Gauls was during the time of Vercengetorix and even then some tribes in the south part of today's France were pro-Roman. The only time the Germans acted together was by the instigation of one Herman, remembered for leading three Roman legions to a surprise party at the welcoming meadows of the Teutoburg Forest. The Iberians were divided between Carthage and Rome and even though they put up some heavy resistance to Rome, they were assimilated. My point - don't worry about heirs for the "barbarian" factions.
