I believe it is not that simple. Guide exists.
Rather then that, it is pointless. Whoever throws pila first wins.

I am so bored with vanilla Rome. SPQR seems to be done very professionally that is why I think it's worth the effort to play online.

    Better than watching TV.

I understand your reasons really so let me put it up again for you.
There si guide for multiplayer in 7.0 SPQR as its not that easy to set up I believe.
2nd - Roman factions pwn as they are only one really balanced when it comes to unit pricing. Therefore, go figure.

On the contrary, making SPQR work in MP is very easy.
You just delete the map.rwm file in the following folders
    (your rtw/spqr folder)\data\world\maps\base\map.rwm
    (your rtw/spqr folder)\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\map.rwm
    (your rtw/spqr folder)\data\world\maps\campaign\sons_of_mars\map.rwm

Then you start the game and shut it down again immediatly. This will generate a new map.rwm file in the base folder. Copy this map.rwm file and paste it in the folders you previously deleted it in. Now, the person you want to play with needs to have this same file, so you need to give it away through email for example, and this other person needs to replace the map.rwm in these same locations with your file.

SPQR does work in multiplayer, we've played 2 whole campaigns using it, since it's between players you can choose yourself how you want to balance the forces between you. Only units that are truly imbalanced are the praetorians and the spartans.

    Have fun!

    Edit:
This is how you make it work in Gamespy, I'm not sure if all this is needed in hamachi.
This only has to be done once, after I did this the first time I've played SPQR in multiplayer, I've also played this same install of SPQR in my singleplayer campaign, and going back to MP is no problems, and you don't need to fix any files again.

Another thing is that I propose using the SPQR 7.0 without unit addon for MP, since the unit addon does some funny things in the rosters

    Thanks for the information.
If you池e not interested in campaigns at all, what files can be deleted totally so that the map.rwm files are no longer an issue?

I think you got me wrong there. The campaign I was referring to was an offline "game" where we would settle disputes with battles using SPQR.
The procedure I listed is the necessary way to proceed if you intend to play the game using the built in Gamespy feature.
I'm guessing it should be the same for hamachi, but I've never tried rtw using hamachi, since GS has worked satisfactory.

We used a 1 to 2 ratio between value of Roman and barbs in our campaign, and it seemed rather balanced.

True that. Although the sheer morale of Roman units should overcome anything really. Except for Greek / Macedonian armies.
    Or elephants maybe?
