I was wondering if massive napoleonic battles acted like fertilizer for the field upon which they were waged? i was thinking with all the decomposing remains and excretement and blood that it would fertalize the ground? anyone know of any stories of a bumper crop being harvested on a field a year or two after a battle?

I don't think it'll make up for the earth that has been destroyed by cannons and horses.

I'm pretty sure they buried the remains in mass graves...what a morbid thread.

Are you hoping for a farming bonus in a region after an epic slaughter?

I don't see earth being destroyed at all, just being moved around a little. Now the flora on top of that dirt? Yup, dead as dead can be after a battle, but the earth underneath should be the same as before, and yes, even better, because of the "fertilizer".

In fact I believe it was a book titled Men of Waterloo that stated that the Belgium peasants were still talking a few years after the battle how their crop yields were so much better than before the battle. So I do think that at the time people realized or at least thought that all of the blood and flesh helped fertilize the soil to some degree.

well i was thinking.. if they're already going to have rotting corpses on the battlefield, they should go the whole nine yards and make the grass grow better after a battle too. assuming there is a historical basis for it.

This pumpkin was harvested soon after the battle of Waterloo. 'Rotting meat for the agriculture!'

I have no idea if you want a serious answer. But just incase you do...

It does make the harvest grow better. Obviously not that year, but the subsequent year. Even the pounding of cannon balls helps to irrigate the earth for better growth.

Nature loves a battlefield after a good bloodbath.

extra carbon (=human, burned land) = extra fertile

but I doubt that this would add a dimension to the game
