I've never noticed a phalanx doing poorly against infantry like other spearmen (triarii, Libyan spearmen, etc.). And the phalanx reverses the charge bonus of cavalry; learned the hard way by yours truly and his General's Bodyguard so long ago.![]()

Thank you. One question remains unanswered though.
Can anyone quantify the malus a spearmen unit gets against other infantry?
I don't know the answer aswell but i too think about it like Max already said.
I mean the units do have a lot of values for this and that and based on these values
the outcome of a battle between two units gets calculated.
Now there are a few units who get bonus/penalty against certain units but that's more
something additional. If two infantry units are facing eachother, there is in first case no
need for bonus/malus to indicate which unit is stronger.
Look the stats of both units you want to compare and it should be self-explaining, which
is the stronger one.
Basically you will find info about bonus/malus of a unit in the unit's description (right-click onto
the unit card) and if you can't find one then there is none.

Thanks guys. Meanwhile, I found the answer in the .org scriptorium. Spearmen receive a +8 def bonus against cav and a -4 def malus against inf.
The same may apply also to phalanx, as they also have the spear attribute, but I am not so sure about that.

An almost related question:why chariots cut through pikemen like butter, but get pwned by militia hoplites?
Sorry, I can't answer that. Maybe someone else?
...I've never seen that. If they charge in at the side, yeah, they'll crush the pikemen, but if they charge the front, they die when they touch the first spear, no matter if it's a levy pike or a Royal/Silver Shield pike. And that's true for any kind of phalanx (pike, Poeni, or hoplite): Chariot + Front of a Phalanx = Dead Chariots.

But sometimes, demoralized hoplites.
when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.
