This is really weird. I am getting a message that says "MEIITW has encountered an unspecified error" every time I try to start a campaign. I reinstalled the Kingdoms 1.5 patch, DLV, and the DLV 6.2 upgrade. Everything was working fine until I upgraded to Windows 7, now I'm getting this problem and have no idea why.
Try to set the same values in both .cfg files, save them and mark in file properities as "read only" so they can't be changed.
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

This is the only forum I visit with any sort of frequency and I'm glad it has provided a home for RTR since its own forum went down in 2007. Hopefully my donation along with others from TWC users will help get the site back to its speedy heyday, which will certainly aid us in our endeavor to produce a full conversion mod Rome2.
I reinstalled everything when I upgraded, and then again after I started getting this problem. Vanilla MEII and Kingdoms both work fine. When I open DLV I'm able to fight custom battles and quick battles. When I try to launch a campaign, I select a country and hit start campagin. It gives me a loading screen and the progress bar fills up but when it's going from the loading screen to the campaign map it CTD's and says it's encountered an "unspecified error". It did successfully load one time but the UI was all kinds of ****ed up. There were just white boxes where messages should be with this type of text.
In the Data/UI rename these three files:
strategy.sd
battle.sd
shared.sd
to:
strategy.bak
battle.bak
shared.bak

That should take care of any white box. Anyhow, to me, SS is eye-candy and thats it. Except for this small exception:

Prepping your Windows 7 system for Stainless Steel and other mods
-----------------------------------------------------------------
As the discussion below shows, it's possible to set up your system so that you can avoid a lot of the hassle that is associated
with installing Stainless Steel, and especially large sub-mods thereof.
1) Turn of the User Account Control.
Go to the Control Panel.
Click on User Accounts
Click on Change User Account Control settings
Slide the slider to the bottom.
Click OK and reset the PC.
-------------------------------------------------
2) Installing M2TW / Kingdoms
You can choose to install M2TW/Kingdoms and mods in a different folder ot the default one.
Choosing a shorter file path, eg C:/Games\M2TW could save a lot of hassle if your mod has long filenames.
-------------------------------------------------
3) Establishing permissions
Open your windows explorer to show the program files folders.
Open the one you have placed SEGA/Medieval II Total War in.
Navigate to the MIITW folder.
Right click on the folder
Click on properties
Click on Security
Click on Users
Click on Edit
Tick the relevant boxes
Click on OK
------------------------------------------------
4) Always check the properties of any folder and files you intend modding to ensure they have had the read-only
attribute removed.
However if you're going with the default install path ....
The new 2 megaupload install files should address most of the problems mentioned below. So try installing them direct rather than using the temp folder option.
However if that fails (not that I have reason to believe it will, but just in case,) try the method below.
How I installed Real Combat / Real Recruitment compilation into Stainless Steel 6.1 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having tried and failed to install the compilation several times I decided upon a new approach.
0) Turn off UAC and make the Medieval II folder readable
(ie change the properties of the folder and all files inside to be able to be written to.)
1) Install, as per usual, M2TW, kingdoms, (with or without 1.5 patch), Stainless Steel 6.0 pts 1+2 and the 6.1 patch.
2) Check this installation works.
3) Place the main RC/RR compilation files (1 .exe and 3 data) into a new folder on the hard drive.
What you call it is irrelevant. (No that doesn't mean you call it "irrelevant".)
4) Run the installer .exe and change the destination location to the name of the folder.
5) This will take time to run. Whilst it's running remove the file_tasks.bat file and stick it on the desktop.
6) At some point you'll get a notification about the pike filename problem. This you can skip.
Hopefully it will be sorted in another version of the installer files.
7) When the installation finishes, the Program Compatibility Assistant will pop up and tell you there was a problem with the installation
and do you want to re-install to fix it. Politely decline the offer.
8) Copy the data and then the mods folders into the Medieval II folder.
When asked about copy and replace tick the wee box about doing this for all files, there's rather a lot to do manually!
It'll grumble about needing administrator permission, but we'll assume you're the admin on your system otherwise you'll
need to sort that out before you begin. Tell it to continue.
Eventually it'll finish copying the thousands of files.
Now copy the file_tasks.bat into the Med II folder and run it.
9) Don't try and run the game yet as it'll fall over once it gets past the splash screen.
10) How apply the latest and best Hotfix.
11) You'll need up un-7zip it, then copy the data and mods folders over as above.
12) Then copy the file_tasks2.bat file into the med II folder and run it.
13) Now insert the kingdoms DVD into the drive and click on the stainless steel icon.
and if you've been good, the prog will start and play nicely.

It may be UAC (User account control) turn it off... Some Vista users have the same problem with Third age (I was the one) and after turning it off it works fine.As for WIN 7 http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...ows-7s-uac.ars it has more problems then Vista or maybe I am wrong.
Because of heavy scripting it may be fighting with admin privileges...
1- Go into the directory of DLV (by default: ~\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\deus lo vult) and add these lines to the top part of the config (.cfg) files :
[io]
file_first = true
disable_file_cache = true
2- go into the ~/data/world/maps/base directory and delete the map.rwm file
then, it will be longer to load your campaign, because the engiine re-create the map.
