Best resolutions, settings?

To have large or huge unit scales, what is the best resolutuon and settings to have both quality of units and smoothness of gameplay? I have a good comp and a good graphics card but i cant seem to find what is best for me. any ideas?

For best performance AND visual appearance, play the game in windowed mode, and use the same resolution ingame as you use for your desktop.
I actually have better performance on my computer on windowed 1440x900 than I have not windowed in 1024x768...
