Default Help needed with Data Base editor!!!

Recently i have edited certain details on the units of Empire total War and the game...well it doesn't crash but is simply doesn't respond.

This is what i did :

    1. Created a back up file for Patch.pack(in a separate folder), opened db editor and loaded the patch.pack from common/empire total war/data.

    2. changed the accuracy and fighting stats of certain units, in units_stats_land_tables.

    3. i saved the changes and opened the game and no problem. It was all going well and the changes did take place in-game.

    4. However i changed the name of certain units, saved the changes and the game crashed when i tried to open it.

    4. Anyway That wasn't a problem since i had a backup for patch.pack, so i replaced the edited patch.pack with the back up(original/default). But the game now doesn't crash but instead it stops responding.

Now i am not a computer genius and i am unsure what to do from this point onwards.
So please can anyone help me?

Let Steam check and repair the ETW game files for you. Select "Empire Total War" in Steam's list of installed games, click "properties", then select the tab for "Local files", and finally click the button for "Verify the integrity...". Wait for the result of the verification, and then try to launch ETW again. Things should work after that.

Each unit in the game gets the information from its appearance and characteristics from several different files, and they all need to know what the name of the unit in question is. If you change the name of the unit in one place, you must change it accordingly in all other places as well. If you don't, the game can't work and crashes. Check the tutorials for editing unit data.

Thanks Demokritos. I have done that later, but my real issue is what exactly went wrong. that would be great to know so i wouldn't repeat it.

The solution to your problem depends on exactly what you did and what you want to do, but you should check the tutorials for creating new units. They tell you what files you need to insert the name of the new unit in (which files are using the name of the unit), which may be the same in your case.

But as a rule, to safeguard against future CA patches destroying your changes, you should make a separate mod with the changes you want, and activate that mod for your game. No need to backup anything then - except perhaps the loc file. Depending on what you want to do, without a change in the loc file, your name change might not show on the screen.

But all this become clearer when you study the tutorials for making new units etc.
