    Default Middle-earth Trivia

A thread for all those of you who know way too much about the works of Tolkien, and are not afraid to show it. The one who answers the question correctly asks the next one.

What does R ND R stand for, and who used it?

    Apoc

This is a shameless ripoff of this thread, made by Anathema.

Is this a hidden recruitment thread? I'd say you're hoping for someone to know all the answers and then just add him to your team hehe. I personally don't know the answer to your question. I know the trilogy, the hobbit and the silmarillon and if the answer to your question is hidden in one of these books, well then I might consider reading them again. Though I might have no clue because I read the books in French and therefore, R ND R could have been transcripted in a whole different way.

    Cheers!!!

Sure, you COULD play any other mod. But The Crusades has so much more to offer!

Hehe, well, if someone proves himself time and again in this thread, he (or she) may have a shot at joining us, though it takes a lot more than knowledge about the works of Tolkien to get on the team (as a designer); good English and writing skills for one.

The answer to the above question is hidden in Unfinished Tales, and it shouldn't matter if it is in French because R ND R wouldn't be translated. Another clue there...

I'll ask another question which may be a little less difficult: how many Elves were there really at Helm's Deep?

R ND R was the seal of the Stewards of Gondor, it signifies Arandur (steward).

Arakorn, that Glorfindel was a different one. Or was it? Some people reckon that it's the same guy who got sent back.

    Apparently, Tolkien thought so too.

That depends on your opinion of whether or not to regard his letters as Tolkien "fact" I suppose. I don't.

Not really. It is fact that Tolkien decided that Glorfindel returned to Middle-earth, and that was what I said; whether or not you consider the writings in the HoMe-books (or even the Silmarillion) as "canon" is another matter entirely - one I didn't comment on.

I prefer answering, not asking, so Achilles, you can ask again.

    Next question:

What was the name of the banner-bearer of Manwë?

Eonwe. With an umlaut over the E that I can't be bothered to add.

In the absence of Gandalf and Denethor, who was appointed temporary command of the defenders of Minas Tirith during it's seige in the War of the Ring?

Over both the o and e, actually: Eönwë ;) Correct as usual.
