Is there a reason why "Surprisingly tookish"? is the recommended game difficulty? Like, does it break the game balance if you pick something higher?
For the campaign, basically it has been tested on the reccomended difficulty. On a different level other factions can be too aggressive, or too unbalanced. Iirc Harad becomes monstrous on higher difficulty.
The mod is currently balanced so that the AI factions have the bonuses they would normally have in vanilla Very Hard campaign difficulty at the recommended "Decidedly Tookish" campaign difficulty. This is to allow the player a challenge while maintaining the ability to pursue diplomatic options. On higher campaign settings it is very difficult to avoid simply being at war with all other factions at all times, which, while it may be challenging, is a lot less interesting for those who want to explore the diplomatic side of things.
Also, several factions are meant to have "unbreakable" alliances in this mod, and a higher campaign difficulty will make these alliances far less "unbreakable".
Battle difficulty can be set higher than recommended without unbalancing the mod.
Could somebody remind me how to recruit Crossbowmen as Dale? I have a 5th level Barracks and a siege workshop in Dale, but I can't remember what the next step is, and don't have an option to build a crossbow workshop or anything like that. Thanks.
Been a long time, but is the crossbow building a Specialization Building? If so, you won't be able to build it unless you've either built City Specialization or destroyed any other SB that you may have already constructed.
crossbows are part of dale's unique inventor's workshop line, and also requires the seige workshop specialisation building to have been built. You might have already gone down an inventor's workshop line (stuff like the mills, ploughs etc.) which you'll have to destroy, then rebuild the inventor's workshop, and then the crossbow building should be available.
The required build tree is > Military Policy > Control Posts > Urban Province > Major Province > Inventors Workshop > City Development > Hosting Halls > Lord's Barracks > Siege Workshop > Crossbow Workshop, it's a long and expensive process unfortunately
