Tired of this crap.....trolls

Ok so this is the senario...im defending Emyn Arnen (After crushing the harad) and iv got a full stack of gondorian soldier in it. Stone wall because it holds enough units on the wall to press on the attackers but not to small for lack of troops or not to big so i dont have to use to many units to fill up the section. on the walls i have no archers cuz frankly gondors archers dont apeal to me in defending settlements, i just use Pelargir Mariners.

Mordor has a full stack of units simply all orc raiders and looters....except two units of mountain trolls. (not even olag hai!!!! so im like ok well thats ok ill just box them in with calvary (swan knights)since thats been working for me against trolls...(being heavy infantry and all) so iv got all my rank two army (Silver) ready to go...mariners on the walls for the two ladders and towers...

got my calvary left and right of the gate behind some citadel gaurd and gondor infantry and spears along the main roads. two betalions of Fountain gaurds at the gate so they can bunch up and get oiled on. easy win right since all my heavy infantry can easily defeat the orcs in the streets. battle is against my favor but im really good at defending...dont hardly loose my cities to enemy assults...press start and the battle is on..while the orcs are inching there way to my wall at the same time my marines let loose there volleys into them and half of the ladder and tower orcs are gone before they even reach my wall. the ram inches forward and does its work since the rams cant be burned anymore...well anyway to keep this short they break the gate come pouring in..slowed down by my Guards at the gate and get poured on by oil for a bit and then they swarm by guards and into the city they are...somehow the two units of trolls went from the back of the army to the front...ok so let loose my units and calvary on them squeezing them in...
easy win....(orcs spread out into the main street and begin fighting my main units...going nowhere and slowly getting pushed back...

out of nowhere the two troll units split up and each CLIMB THE PARAPETS AND TOTALLY ANNIALATE MY WALLED UNITS IN SECONDS

im like what the heck...how do trolls climb up onto the wall..now my walls are defenseless and i mean in seconds...im in total shock at this point and now the orcs gain the walls and are climbing down and flanking my knights. several minutes or so, my knights are gone the trolls are wreaking havoc in the streets since for my luck the general get killed in one swing of a troll club and now my men are getting overrun and still trolls take no damage and in about ten minutes my army is crushed and i loose an easy battle...

what the heck....ok i get the part where there trolls are huge and powerfull and all but seriously slack it down on the stats of these things and climbing up the wall...really....please comment...(Sorry for the long read)

well you are right - trolls are really a pain in the ass when you have to face them
on walls. but i think this is okay since their stats don't change when they fight on
walls - its just that your units don't have the ability to get into formation which is
the only way to kill trolls with weak units.

so as soon as you see trolls heading towards ladders or towers to get on your walls
you should retreat from the walls. i mean it is hard to kill troll in the city (street ...)
as well but on the walls you have no chance. (only archers can help you beat up the
trolls if they are on the alls to and in direct line of sight.)

you always should try to hit on the trolls outside of your settlement with cavalry
which you have to ride out through the side gates. this is the only way to keep
your causalities low. but once they are inside your walls it always will end up in
a messy blood bath.

Well, at least with the variety. "Oh my God, Trolls on walls".

But seriously, I recently had some unpleasant troll experiences myself, so changing their stats might not be a bad idea - one unit of my trolls slaughtered by a nasty hobbit horde, two units of trolls destroyed in a sea of dwarven axes, 17 trolls lost in a bridge battle against Eriador, so I agree that boosting their stats might be a good idea...

i know about the side door calvary attack works its just having trolls atop your walls...come on thats just dumb...and its the fact that i mean my army was wiped out so fast...

not to mention the whole two battalions of trolls against like 2000 troops and all my guys get slaughted...just non realistic....

i know people have posted troll problems before but really...someones got to do something...dont even get me started with RR RC...dear god might as well be offering my troops to a slaughter house...(troll slaughters your troops house)

make them really bad against arrows or SOMETHING....i like playing against mordor but its no fun when they start sending trolls....

what are you supposed to do against a troll(33attack, like 15 charge and 32defense) vs (11,7,17)
gondorian spearman or swordsman... plus using calvary is good but that takes a huge toll...not to mention half of mordors troops use spears and halberds...thats all i got to say.

A. Trolls can be defeated economically with well-chosen weakish units (AP and/or javelins). Cav charges after they're already tied up can work well.

B. Never get into melee with trolls on walls.

C. Again, never get into melee with trolls on walls.

and you should definitely try archers on trolls on the battlefield (not in settlements).
i made some good experience with them - concentrate no-fire arrows on them.

In my Silvan campaign (RR/RC) I can bring down 1, 1 and a half unit of Mountain/Cave Trolls with my archers only. Those Trolls that survive I tie up with Silvan Spearmen - usually their HP is low already thanks to the arrow rain, so they go down quickly. And because the Trolls are fast, I still have some time to shoot at anything else that can endanger me (Halberds/Black Numenoreans!).
I didn't encounter any Olog-hai yet, so from custom battle tests I know that arrows are much weaker against them.

Javelins should be used en masse, if available. Tie the Trolls up with a cheap unit, then put your javelins in range and deplete ammo. Your fodder unit will take casualties, but the Trolls will most likely go down.

You were just caught of guard, I was kind of surprised too at first when I saw them with ladders.
The thing is that movement in settlements it's not that good and for AI controlled trolls is even worse, so the AI can be really stupid like just sitting there on the wall doing nothing. Just be sure to have plenty of missile fire to kill them from a distance, and get your units off the wall when they climb them.

If you say you have Pelargir Mariners and loose against some Trolls it's your own fault.
And as infantry Trolls can get on walls (though I thought a bug made it impossible to use ladders which made KK quite happy).
Beside mordors armies are such crap that the trolls and troll catapults are the things that help you not to die from boredom when you fight them.

They are already vulnerable enough against:
AP
Heavy cav
Javelins
Siege equipment
and mountain trolls even against mass arrows

I don't think trolls are too overpowered in meleé, trolls seems to lose to most decent units in a drawn out fight. At least Eldar Archers and Mithlond Warriors can easily kill trolls in close combat.

Now Troll Catapults, that is an overpowered unit! Insanely accurate, huge range and hard to knock out from a distance...

I liken it sorry to the usual human behaviour cry this game is to easy i want it harder something comes that is hard and oh bull thats not realistic trolls are huge near fearless (specially when being driven by there masters) killing machines, they will in game as would in real smash into and through large forces of puny human men LOL.

I dont see you writing about how easy the orcs are how many huge heroic victories you have achieved over these inferior low moral troops oh no just complaints when something that requires tactics to beat (not huge tactics either) something that finally requires more than selecting your whole army and just clicking to attack sitting back and waiting for the victory flash up

mordor is full of mediocre troops even there top line orcs are greatly weaker than gondorian counterparts the trolls are there level the playing ground troop and you want to weaken them i say man up read the countless troll killing threads and earn your victory over the power rising in the east . either that or just hit the auto win attacker cheat and forget about it

Insanely accurate? I won a battle just because they hit orcs twice as many times as they hit my troops.

Make trolls Mordor with all their upkeep and training cost; bring them to me and I'll hunt them. Cavalry into their flank/rear, fountains straight into their front, vh/vh. Bring 'em on.

You can sally out of town and kill them in the field like MDT says. Why wait for them to come to you? Sally out, give em a few cavalry charges, kill a couple of them, if you're losing get back in the city and take the draw. hopefully you've whittled their number down and if they do decide to assault after the sally, you should be fine...or at least in better shape.

NEVER think a battle is an easy win, even when that's true.
Underestimate enemy is the better way for useless friend casualties, and worst for failling.

Wow, really people? In spite of the fact there are 100 posts about trolls and how to kill them, on it goes. Its reallllllly simple. AP. Go do a custom battle and recruit 6 units of eorling ax, versus 2 units of trolls. Trolls, dead. I am finishing a campaign now as Silvans and talk about overpowered, park one unit of ents at a gatehouse and watch what happens. My 1 unit of ents just killed 2 units of Ologs and 1 of mountain trolls, and lost 2 of 8 ents doing it.

The only place they really are just almost unstoppable is on walls, but please quit saying its unrealistic. If the spartans could kill 1000:1 because the enemy had to come in small groups, imagine a plate armored 8ft tall steroided out psycho against some archers lined up 2 deep. I would expect they could do the same damage the spartans did? And even that depends on the faction. Put some Dragonslayers on the wall decked out in plate and see what happens when one group is in front of the trolls and one is behind!

The point being every faction has tactics that will work and every faction has some unique abilities. Last Gondor campaign the Black Gate had alllll sorts of trolls on the walls, but something about 6 units of trebs seemed to take care of them fine...
