NEW YORK—"Catcher in the Rye" author J.D. Salinger has died at age 91 in New Hampshire. The author's son, in a statement from the author's literary representative, says Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.
"The Catcher in the Rye" with its immortal teenage protagonist—the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield—came out in 1951 during the time of anxious, Cold War conformity.
Salinger wrote for adults, but teenagers all over the world identified with the novel's themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy.
In later years, Salinger become famous for not wanting to be famous, refusing interviews.

Wonder how many people will run out and buy the book now.

Incidently, I've still not read it.

I wrote an essay in CitR this week, got it back today. Didn't get very good grades tbh, if he had seen it he would have got into his grave anyway, just to turn in it.

    Don't it's terrible.
You what? It's brilliant. Some people just don't get it, mostly people who had a brilliant childhood and therefore cannot relate to teen alienation. Girls, especially, don't get it and so often don't enjoy it. But it is probably the best ever American book, much better than Huck Finn or Moby Dick.

The other reason people don't like it is that it is curriculum matierial for many people. I just found it and thought it looked good.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

Catcher in the Rye is an excellent book. One of the best books I ever had to read for school.

I read your book, at first the book was incredibly boring and the main character Holden made me want to burn the book, a couple chapters in, my hate was replaced with, i want MORE.

Its very hard to make me read a book, let alone....love it.

Really? I simply loathed it from start to finish. It read like a rant about how much life sucked for him, even though he never really had it that bad, and those things that were bad were mostly brought on himself. Classifying it as a classic is........not something that I agree with.

That's the whole point. He is a deeply flawed character. Indeed, he goes beyond even being an antihero by becoming a subject of pity more than admiration, though even that is hard given his arrogance. He also defies the genre of bildungsroman by not really maturing by the end, as in most coming of age books. Yet he is the epitomy of 50s USA youth alienation. He is a hypocrite - he complains at people for being phony and two-faced, yet is a compulsive liar. He inflicts his alienation on himself, almost as a form of protection from the complexity of the world he finds himself approaching (the eponymous allegory of the Catcher in the Rye springs to mind here, he wants to stop children from falling from the nice safe mountain off the cliff of adolesence and into the pit of the world of phonies).

I did To Kill A Mockingbird in English and chose 1984 for my personal study. I've got a few books to read though so CITR will be one of them.

Everyone does 1984 for their Personal Study. I decided to be different and do CitR. I heard Salinger has 15 unpublished books in a safe in his house. Surely at least one more of them is a future classic.

Nobody in my year did it

CITR is the most obvious one, a few did that I think.

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.
