I need a good documentary to watch. A historical one possibly about Rome, Dark ages, renaissance, etc. It has to be fairly new and something you enjoyed. I have watched some History channel documentaries but am looking for more.

"Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared."-- Eddie Rickenbacker (1890-1973)
If you fancy good documentaries, try Underworld: Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age, it's very enlightening, though it delves a little further back than ancient Rome I'm afraid. Very good though

Well it's not about Rome or anything that you asked for but it's an excellent documentary.
It's called Shadow Company, and it's easily the best documentary out there about PMCs. It shows both sides of the argument really well, along with a decent history lesson on the mercenaries and letters narrated by Gerard Butler !
I would have to recommend what I believe is the definitive WW2 documentary, The World at War.
I understand that you said that you were looking for modern documentaries, and this is not modern. It was made in the 70's, which means that it is a bit old, some of the footage looks a bit dated, but it also means some other important things.
1. Interviews
They have Albert Speer. They have Mark Clark. They have Model. They have Hoth (I think). They have Alexander's and Eisenhower's primary advisors. They have the Japanese deputy prime minister. They have Hitler's secretary. They have common soldiers from every theater, who give you eyewitness accounts from the invasion of Poland to Midway to El Alamein to the fall of Berlin. It is enormously interesting to hear from the people who were actually there, some even in the most pivotal roles.
2. Footage.
As this is 1970, there is no CGI, which means no cheesy fight scenes. Every single second of film is one of three things, authentic war film, and interview or a map. No silly CGI sequences.
3. Narrator
Laurence Olivier is the man
Honestly, this is my favorite documentary of all time, nothing comes close to it.
And to top it off, there are 35 episodes, each an hour long.
(Just click on it for the other parts)
One of the most enjoyable documentaries I have watched in recent years (If you can tolerate Jeremy Clarkson that isDon't worry, he's not too bad in this)
Other then that, as someone else said the World At War is probably the best WW2 documentary series going. The interviews in it are particualrly interesting.
Under the Patronage of Jom!

There's a documentary on youtube on the art of war by the history channel. It was a rare gem from a channel that is shunning away from actual history.
