Question regarding difficulty as Rome

The morale of Roman troops vs barbarian troops is incredible. A small army of trained soldiers with or without artillery can rout barbarian armies of 3x the size of a Roman force. How can I play this great mod whilst actually having a challenge as Rome? It's all too easy for me to crush the Visigoths and retake lost land with just a few armies, and I want to play this mod so that it really feels like an epic struggle against the barbarians, every battle counting, not some walk over of storm troopers vs Masai farmers proportions!
