Default Mirkwood Rangers - Released - Now available in campaign

With the coming release of FROME I have decided to release this minimod as kind of a sneak preview. These are incredibly good archers and they are for the Silvan Elves only.

Thanks to koultouras for making the model.

They are now recruitable in campaign and have their own unit and unit info card. Note that the unit card isn't that good as I'm not very skilled in making them.

They are recruitable from the woodsmen's guild.

For the installation, extract it into your Third_Age folder and overwrite.

You could use the model of one of the "old dale" bower units. They might not look like elves but, you could name then into Elve Archer and upgrade the Galadhrim Archer to that Elite archer of yours.
Honestly I don't think that Silvans lack of good Archers. There rooster ist very good in that regard. The Galadhrim Archers have a very long range and all others at least long range bows. So, I think Silvans lack more in the melee and cavallerie department. So, one possibility would be to give them a better and cheaper heavy infantrie unit and maybe make all elves a bit faster than other foot troops. That would allow them to catch fleeing enemies.
Back to the old dale units. As far I saw from the cavallerie unit crads their usual dress is green and so they could act as Elves, or Elve helpers /Allies.

I Think it's a good idea.. a bit like the st. johns chapelguild in medieval where you can train black knights in the middle east.. but these elite units should really be expensive or at least could not join a free upkeep unit slot perhaps?

By my opinion both elven armies should have more variation in their units.. i think the are to few choices

Can you make them wearing hoods? Hooded elves is what I miss in this faction!

Edit: Ok, I just saw the concept pic El Cid posted.

it is not that hard.... but for the time being i have very limited free time..... to construct a model from scratch
so i will try some premade models and add some hoods to see if they fit....
i am not saying that it would look excactly like the concept art but
i ll give it a try sometime
we do need an additional unit for Mirkwood , but not an elite one .... we will see....

The concept art is really close to the forest wardens unit, just give them a bow.
I played a long campaign with Dale recruiting a lot of archer and never got offered a woodsmen guild, maybe you should make it available from the first tier guild.

Good idea, I will pm koultouras!
I have thought about that, but it wouldn't from the first tier guild make them too easy to get? Will do it anyway as the player has to be able to get them easily. Otherwise it's no fun.

Great Ideas! I think that they should use forest wardens' model with hood (and maybe less bright colours) but with heavy archer's bow.

So you don't like Dúnedain/Ithilien/Athala Rangers?

If you implement this unit, please give the guy another bow. The one in the concept drawing doesn't work (and it looks like something from WarCrack).

IMO the warden's model is perfect, but it will have to be retextured as bright green just doesn't cut it. And another bow as was mentioned, maybe just the one from the Sentinels.

I have one problem, I get Unlocalised placement text if I scroll over the unit, though I did delete export_unit_strings.txt .

I fail to see how a hood restricts your vision, unless it covers your face. Besides, we're talking about elven vision.

Apart from that, Legolas himself (quite a skillful bowman, I would say) is described as wearing a hood, and the Silvan Elves generally wore hoods. Here's a passage from the Fellowship of the Ring in Lothlórien, for example:

'There is one of my people yonder across the stream,' he [Haldir] said, 'though you may not see him.'
He gave a call like the low whistle of a bird, and out of a thicket of young trees an Elf stepped, clad in grey,
but with his hood thrown back; his hair glinted like gold in the morning sun.

Well i just came back from a hunting trip at the end of the past November season. It was cold.I had on boots and thick padded outfit.I had my cap hat on with my hood pulled over it.I bagged one 8 point buck and two doe on the same weekend. My hood did not interfere with my shots.A three were running when i made the shots. So i think it's safe to say you can hit your targets with a hood.

Shot in the foot, much? Neither is that during a combat situation - and almost all cloaks worn by travellers have hoods in any case.

Hunting, wearing a hood is better dependant on situation, breaking up your outline.

Hunting with a rifle, as opposed to drawing back an arrow? Tell you what, wear a hoody, and take up the drawn position. See where the hood lies? Yes, in front of your eyes.
