i remember playing this mod as the Aztecs, but i dont see them anymore.

what happened?

In 6.1 the Americas has been removed and replaced with more of the middle east and the Russian steppes

what would you recommend as an alternative faction?

also, i did not have an option to disable certain elements of the mod when i installed and patched it, are they still optional? if so, how do i find them to see what they are/if i want them

That would depend on your preferred tactics and overall strategy

i.e. if you like playing with lots of Heavy inf go with denmark, if you like horse archers you go with Turks

I personally find France, Kwarezmia and Byzantium as the most enjoyable factions

Love the previous faction suggestions! Other than them, I really like Novgorod, Venice & Kingdom of Jerusalem. They are all challenging in their own way, and each have great unit rosters. In short, they are all well worth playing.

I like Byzantium, Teutonic order, Crusader states and Kwarezm... they are all very tough to play with.
