Volga Bulgars, not Bulgaria. It's another steppe faction: here's a map, courtesy of wudang_clown.

So Volga Bulgars would be the next faction, and not medieval Bulgaria that we know from the Balkans. i think that Balkan Bulgarians are already in the game but as rebels, you come across them just north of the Constantinople.

Yep there's the province of Varna with Asen as leader. In the closed BC forum i suggested and Miraj seemed interested, to make the province of Varna part of ERE at the start of the game and have the bulgarians emerging as rebels in 1185 - like it is now with the 4th crusade

There were discussions back just after 1.0 if i recall about bringing in the Bulgars, both Danube and Volga varities, but nothing really came of it even in terms of discussion produced on the boards.

I think the problem with the Bulgarians on the danube is that they are too european, the limits of the map mean an arbitrary cut off point of some sort, Bulgaria is a good one. plus at the starting date given they were not actually independent the Romans under Manuel I dominated the Balkans as much as they had in Basil II's day. And the beauty of BC is it takes us to places we've never been before in gaming, why go to somewhere moderately familiar?

The main problem with the Volga Bulgars would be source information on their military which is scanty (well according to Runciman admittedly) could the BC team really flesh a full roster without crossing ground that the Kypchaks provide?
Who cares if we don't learn from History, its bloodly interesting.

Too much weird stuff happens for god not to exist

Ladies like superior firepower literally and metaphorically

England>Scotland and rest of the world, only the Welsh come even close.

That's great to hear. I really hope that everything goes as planned with the new, super huge map, because all the news about bringing in Kara Khitai and Volga Bulgaria sound really exciting.

Is there any hope for an update to the Kingdom of Makuria? Or the addition of any other Africa based factions?

Yes, there is. An update of Makuria will be definitely made. As for new African faction - most likely there will be such.

We have new basic map ready now and we are working on a pre-preview. I guess it's a matter of two weeks and you will see what we have already done.

Will the new map include any more of the Roman Balkans than it already does, or will you be content to keep the dividing line where it is? And I'd definitely suggest giving Varna to the Romans and having it rebel in 1185, it'd be a nice distraction for the Roman player.

Balkans are not included in the 3.0 map. Varna is replaced with other settlement. I can't reveal more, as you need to wait for the first preview which is comming really soon.

HELL yeah to 3.0 this mod is not mere game but a work of art. The 3D model themselves deserve their own place in any museum gallery plus enought details, coolness to rival those $450 aus per unit of teutonic knight each from expensive military miniature such as St petersburg and kings & country.

Btw are heavy cavalry getting a buff against medium/ horse archers when they charge? Watching a bunch of templar knights getting bogged down then butcher by Diqah lancers who are quarter their price is just plain wrong. Watching royal kataphraktoi losing units and getting tie down in a fight against cheap ass seljuk horse archer give me the biggest facepalm i ever given for any military blunders in a RTS game (if i am playing the turk, those kats would be flanked and eliminated). If Alexios in full armor can survive getting charged by a group of norman knights with lance, than theres no way in hell some horse archer with their wooden wolf beating club should be able to touch em. Just feels wrong imo
