Default Help wit RS and Steam

Sorry to post this here too but I would like some help with it.

I recently bought RTW through steam, due to it being $2.50, and I am buying a new laptop. [ASUS G60]. Now my friend has RTW through steam with RS 1.5 installed. He runs vista also. Now RS can be installed and played. Its just that every 3-6 turns it CTD's. I would like to know if its vista the version of RS or if steam is causing it to crash. If it is steam anyone know any fixes becides buying a new copy.

    thanks

    Did he install RS correctly?
That's the only probably cause I can think of, seeing how Steam can't cause something to crash.

It is likely not Steam. I rely heavily on Steam & I have Vista, and I've never had these problems. Was UAC on when you installed RS?

I'm not sure about UAC. Whats the significants? I'll have to ask him. I pretty sure we installed it correctly. I'll find out monday tho when I get my laptop. Really hoping its just a fluke. Let everyone know if I have problems monday.

    Edit:

Was there a special way you had to install it. And is it 1.5c or 1.6? If there is a certain way to install for steam can you please direct me in the right direction?

I just installed rs 1.6 on my new laptop. it was going fine untill it started to load a battle and it ctd'ed.

any ideas why it would or could it be a fluke.

To ANYONE who uses RS WITH STEAM is there a special way to install this mod? or do you follow the instructions?

EDIT: I turned off autosave and it hasn't ctd so far.

I had the same issue with Steam until I found this solution from RCOG:

For those who have steam and have purchased rome total war gold and the alexander expansion, and wish to get this mod working without the "cannot find steam" error, Ive got instructions as to how to make it work (if this has been posted before, feel free to delete this post as it is obsolete).

After installing the mod as usual (into rome total war gold folder),
open steam's games menu, right click "Rome : Total War Gold", and click on "Create desktop shortcut". Once its done, right click the shortcut youve just created and select properties, there will be a line that says something like :

    Target : "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 4760
(at least, thats the target path for me).

Copy that line, then right click on your "Roma surrectum" shortcut on your desktop, and select properties, then overwrite the target path that has been placed there by the install.
Now what this will do is that whenever you will click on the "Roma surrectum" shortcut, the mod will launch through steam while using the RTW original exe (it doesnt use the BI one).
Before using this, I had the mod "working", but not 100% and had frequent, campaign-breaking CTDs. Now it seems to work perfectly, and my Bosporans are crushing those Free scum into the plains. Where they belong, really. Note, I also deactivated UAC.

UAC shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I had no problems with RS and Steam as all RS really does is overwrite RTW completely. It doesn't make its own folder, in which case you'd need to add the -mod line to the launch options. I can't think of anything else, so try disabling UAC by opening Control Panel and searching for User Account Control.

Edit: Are you launching RS through Steam or the desktop shortcut? The proper way is to simply launch RTW: Gold through the Steam 'My Games' panel.

I have gotten it to work with 1.5c and 1.6.
