I was recently reading the Rolling Stone issue commemorating the music of the Naughties when I realised: damn, I'm a freakin music elitist. Well no, that's not true, I've always known I was an elitist . But I also became interested by this huge decade of music that I've been missing out on.

So, any suggestions? (fun fact: I counted 26 albums from the 2000s in my itunes. That comes out to a little more than 4% of my albums )

Kasabian and Kings of Leon are the first two decent ones I thought of.

Yes sir, if you would please just stop reading Rolling Stone:

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
    The Arcade Fire - Funeral
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
The Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
    Caribou - Andorra
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    The National - Boxer
The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows
Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
Department of Eagles - In Ear Park
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
    Gorillaz - Demon Days
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
    Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

I also noticed from your last.fm page (correct me if I'm wrong) that you missed out on the best of the 90s. You definitely need the benefit of that context:
    Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
    Slint - Spiderland
    My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
    Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
    Radiohead - OK Computer

    and the 80s:
    Pixies - Doolittle
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
    Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
The Jesus And Mary Chain: Psychocandy

Apparently I just think you're criminal. See how far you get, 30 years of music is a lot so you may need some hand-holding. Heaven forbid you should actually like some of the stuff, I'll be happy to nudge you further along.

    That's 2 better than therussian :p

Most of those I really like, there's a few I included (from the '00s) that I'm not as familiar with but are necessary to illustrate music these days. But it is far more oriented towards the traditions of rock as therussian is familiar with them, there's no punk, prog, metal, (I can't stand any of these anyways) or urban in that mix.

At least two of them are not noughties artists originally and one hasn't released an album but they did very well during the last decade. I would recomend kasabian, muse, and the white stripes and arctic monkeys from that list but I can't remember anything else at the moment.

SoggyFrog: haha, I like the Rolling Stone. THe only thing that I absolutely can't stand is their lists, which are completely (and they also prompted this little inquiry  )

As for the 80s and 90s, no thank you. THe 80s were just the Dark Ages of music (not including metal) in my opnion, and the 90s.....as long as it's not grunge music. Thanks for the recommends.

Some of the best things that happened to music happened in the 80s and early 90s, it's just that most people don't know about them. As far as the last 30 years go, Rolling Stone is not going to point you towards any of the good stuff, unless every other publication has already done so, will be ridiculously skewed towards big labels and heavily marketed music, and will definitely leave you with false generalizations of those decades. So regarding my 90s suggestions, no, there's no grunge in there.

I decided to take a look at RS' top 100 list, and I noticed a pattern. Rolling Stone's Top 25 of the Decade, by label. Independent labels are marked with an '!'.
    1. EMI
    2. Sony
    3. Warner
    4. Universal
    5. Universal
    6. Merge !
    7. Universal
    8. Sony
    9. XL
    10. Universal
    11. Sony
    12. DFA (dist. EMI)
    13. Universal
    14. Universal
    15. Sony
    16. Sony
    17. Universal
    18. Sony
    19. Sympathy for the Record Industry !
    20. Universal
    21. EMI
    22. Warner
    23. EMI
    24. Sony
    25. Sony

Now, it wouldn't be fair to say that big labels don't put out good albums, but for some context, here's the top 25 from the list of 200 that p4k compiled:
    1. EMI
    2. Merge !
    3. EMI
    4. Warner
    5. Universal
    6. Sony
    7. Sony
    8. Bad Taste !
    9. Paw Tracks !
    10. Universal
    11. Sony
    12. Sympathy for the Record Industry !
    13. Sony
    14. Domino !
    15. Rabid !
    16. Asthmatic Kitty !
    17. EMI
    18. Universal
    19. Merge !
    20. Matador !
    21. self release !
    22. XL !
    23. Arts & Crafts !
    24. Universal
    25. Stones Throw !

Which list are you looking at? The one in the mag (50 Best Albums of the Decade) goes
    Capitol
    RCA
    Nonesuch
    Roc-A-Fella
    V2/Third Man
    Merge
    Aftermath/Interscoe
    Columbia
    Interscoe
    Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam

    For the first 10

Unless of course I'm listing something that's not labels but something else

If you don't see the name of those labels on the list, it's because the name I gave is the name of the parent corporation.

Any suggestions for The Flaming Lips? I really want to try them out, since I"m a huge psychedelic fan. However, I'm very wary of neo-psych bands...

Try 'Clouds Taste Metallic'. 'The Soft Bulletin' is the most popular but I don't think it's as good personally (plus it's way less psychedelic.

And there's loads of good neo-psych bands.
