    Default Help With Rome Gold

Hey I'm experienced with downloading mods for Medieval total war and recently picked up Rome Total War Gold. The problem is, whenever I try to download a mod it never works. Expanded Cultures told me what I have isn't compatable, and other ones installed but didn't have the icons appeared and presented no way to start the game.

Is it possible to use mods with the Gold version of Rome? It's supposed to be patched up to the most recent versions....

Yes, I'm currently using EB with the Gold edition, Steam downloaded. Do you have the correct target file when you download a mod?

EDIT: I'm looking at the Extended Cultures mod, which is what I think you're talking about, and it says that it has its own custom installer? Is that correct?

See I have the Gold version on a single DVD, not through Steam. That probably makes a difference. I've seen alot of help for people who have various versions of Rome through Steam, and they seemed to be Steam related problems.

As for the target files none of the mods have been automatically detecting it, but I try to put it in the Rome folder or create a folder within the Rome folder. I thought my days of mod confusion were over lol. Extended Cultures does have a custom installer, in that you can opt out to have certain touches to the mod, but they're not anything that affects installation. It also says that it should detect the place to install the mod automatically.

Hmm, I see. I never had the Gold version on disc, just regular RTW+BI, so I'm afraid I can't say what's different there. One idea:

Taken from here- "Extended Cultures requires an unmodified RTW data directory to work. It probably will not work if you have installed any mod that overwrites files in the RTW data directory. " Have you previously install/uninstalled any mods? I don't know if the mod will work with that, you could try a fresh install if that's the case.

Barring that, the only other thing I can think of is the addition of extra code to the launcher. Taken from here, "Open Steam, go to the My Games tab and find RTW Gold. Right click on it and select properties. On the general tab click on "Set Launch Properties". In the space provided enter: -show_err -nm -mod:xc"; since you don't have Steam, just make a shortcut for RTW, and in the properties add the -show_err -nm -mod:xc after the target execution file, and try that.

Yeah I already tried that second piece of advice. I think that was meant for steam users anyway. As for a clean install, I think it's clean. I tried downloading darth mod before, but afterwards I couldn't find a place to start the game up. It didn't really work so I uninstalled it. It's not something that alters the original Rome folders, so it should have been clean during my various attempts at XC installs. Well this is confusing.

Yeah, I'm at a loss now, sorry.

Maybe there's somebody else here with the Gold Edition on a disc that could help you.

if it says the destination directory is not valid than the game will not install properly right? or is C:\Rome - Total War\Steam\steamapps\common\rome total war gold the folder Rome Total War Gold was installed into? oh and thank you for your help earlier.

Nah, it should just be 'Steam' as the folder it was installed into, that's not the subdirectory of anything.

If it was installed to just the C:/ drive, like it was for me b/c of Vista, then it would go: C:/Steam/steamapps/common/rome total war gold <- right into that file, it should work fine. You might have to edit the launch properties by typing "-show_err -nm -mod:EB" without the quotation marks. That would be found by right clicking the game in the Steam window and choosing the option for launch properties. Afterward, create a desktop icon and launch it to see if it runs EB- if it does, enjoy!
