In Empire you have to wait 2 turns so you get extra defenses, sandbags etc. I'm not actually sure if there are ambushes in ETW.

You'll have to find a forest area for ambush. When you move your army there, the character crouches and is ready to ambush anyone who passes it. Obviously due to the small attack zone the enemy must go straight next to you for you to be able to launch the ambush.

Ambushes are when your army/columns stop in a wooded area of the campaign map with movement range still available.

They will crouch and say "Ready to Ambush."

As far as how to set it up, the enemy should be in a marching column. The ambush engine isn't perfect, but the key is to deploy your troops in a way that will use their advantages and minimize their disadvantages.

I.E.- Light missile troops and some heavy and light cavalry for screening, or even better missile cavalry, to the column's front. Place heavy infantry along the flanks and light infantry where they can attack enemy missile or skirmishing troops. Light cavalry to the rear will cut off their retreat and prevent them from being able to wheel to form a line to attack your ambushing force.

Some troops hidden on the other flank of the column are good as a final blow, when they turn to face the main front of your assault they can punch into the enemy rear. A single heavy infantry and a single missile or two heavy infantry are perfect for this.
Yes, I hate the fact RTW is out and I still have a Japanese title. Come on now admins- let's get with the program.

When your army crouches down in some trees on the campaign map that means they are ready for an ambush. Any enemy army that tries to walk through that tile will get attacked. Then you'll be told whether or not your attempt to ambush is successful or not and can fight the battle. Personally, I always have some heavy inf or spearmen to greet them at the front, with heavy cavalry and archers on the flanks, and any extra cav in the rear, then all remaining inf in and around the flanks.
    Dyslexia for cure found!!
