He probably deployed his men at the begining of the battle, in a area that didn't have access to the rest of the map... (surrounded by rock, impassible).
Poor fellow.
"I don't understand! How did I sustain 1 casualty!?"
Worst luck ever.

Good things come to those who wait... But better things come to those who never hesitate.
That is indeed one very unfortunate battle. If only he brought a monster bombard or something...
And yes, I have had that happen to me so many times, especially in the alps and america.
Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.
Howdy folks, this is the player of that unfortunate campaign. A little context for your enjoyment..
I run video chronicle that follows a Holy Roman Empire Campaign in Medival Total war two vanilla. 10 turns in, I find myself very unsatisfied with the performance of the AI - I found it too easy to whomp it with inferior forces. So, after a little research, I bought kingdoms and installed Stainless Steel with RR/RC 6.2. Thing is, I'm stuck with my old campaign. So, I did the awesome thing - I decided to do whatever I could to provoke the computer to annihilate me as an 'end' to the HRE Saga before I restarted it in Stainless Steel.
Now, keep in mind, this campaign is a very hard very hard campaign.
I attacked the pope and France, and consolidated ALL my armies (mostly light infantry. Turn 10, and I'm HRE. Money's tight!) into the fortress Bern, and a mountain pass north of Venice. The clip here is about 3 turns after I attacked the pope (and he called a crusade on EGYPT A TURN AFTER), when Venice plopped an army right next to my mountain brigade - this is my attack to try to shove 'em off. The results were...special.
I encourage you fellows to watch the whole thing if you want, and it's an ongoing series. I have a lot of footage to cut. I'll close by noting that I vacated two northern cities while consolidating my forces - 30 turns after getting excommunicated, THEY ARE STILL THERE. Unconquered. untouched. The AI seems far more interested in trying to bribe them. Over. And over. And over. And over...
And my horrid budget situation Post-Excommunication is completely intentionalA side effect of pulling all of one's forces into a few hordes.
