    Default New World

I was informed today (by my brother) that only a certain number of factions get the navy required later on in the game to gain access to the New World provinces.

Since I've never reached that far into the game (intend to do so on my current Russia campaign) I was wondering if this is true or not.

    PS
Maybe this question has been asked a million times before, but I made a search and many threads all from different forums of the TWC board showed up and I have no patience to shift through 150 pages of completely unrelated gobbledegook to reach my answer.

    PSS
Also, has any map been compiled with the location of all the resources in the game. For instance, I believe I have the monopoly of the amber resource, but I am not 150% sure. ATM I control all amber around the Russian steppe, plus the source in Palermo and those in Stockholm, Oslo and Arhus (as well as the stuff around what used to be Poland).

Are there amber sources elsewhere on the map?

Edit: Hmm maybe I posted this in the wrong section. Can a mod be patient and move this to General Discussion? Thanks.

I have never played the game all the way to the new world but I think all the factions can go to the new world but the Al never ever does.

All Factions are able to but AI never does, when you see pictures of other Factions in the New World, its because they've given them a region there, a lot of people do it.

The New World is a great location for merchants and Gold Mining. With Amber, I'm pretty sure there is a bit in France but Amber isn't my favourite.
If you want to put your merchants to maximum use, take them down to Egypt if you can and get them to trade Ivory as it is the most valuable resource in the game, if not Ivory, gold next. But considering Russia's isolated location, Amber is the best your gonna get.
Keep to that market and dominate it, don't let foreign merchants get a foothold there.

I can't answer the New World query, but on the second point (and perhaps not entirely related); has anyone else noticed the slave resource just next to Stockholm? I came across it by accident today when the Danes "sallied forth" while I had them under siege - it's right under the settlement details and not at all easy to see or mouse over. It was worth about 180 fpt once I got a Merchant lined up over it, which isn't a bad return I think

How come I make only 36 fpt when on gold with a 7 finance merchant? the gold in Vienna region, I am the Scots and conquered most of France and Spain.
I even looked to the Aztec gold with toggle_fow, but that was 56 fpt. anyone?
I am writing this when I really needed to do something else...

You must mean Silver. There is Silver in Ireland and lower England - profits are determined by how far the first instance of a particular resource is from your capital, and Silver is very close to Edinburgh.

That sounds just impossible to me. So what is your capital? Do you have gold in your capital? Is Vienna your capital? Btw, Russian merchants are great, and amber is ideal for them to start with. Besides, a lot of AI merchants like to come to Russia to trade amber, and when playing as Russia you will often get "mercantile acquisition" missions from the Merchant's guild, that will give your merchants some nice experience points. Still, I like to send Russian merchants to trade silk, or send them to Vienna, Zagreb, or maybe Italy to trade textiles. Russian merchants make sweet money on almost everything, because Russian regions are pretty poor and have a small number of resources. And even if they have a lot of resources, mostly they're of the same kind (like 4 amber, or that fur things, or a lot of timber resources), so Russia has to import a lot of things using it's merchants, therefore making merchants really really useful for playing as Russia.

Guys, I've just returned to my Russian campaign today and am in year 1264 (the [hopefully] last Mongol horde just showed its face near Baghdad).

What year or turn does the New World appear?

At around 1400 AD you should get a message saying "The World is Round"

You should be able to build better ports when that happens and the ships you can produce with them are able to travel to the new world.

You get the message "the world is round" around 1400.
Right after that, you can construct naval Drydocks from which to recruit Carracks.
Those ship can travel across the Atlantic. Bring lots of good soldiers with you - the Aztecs are not to be underestimated...
As far as I know, all factions in the game has access to these ships.
The factions I´m not sure about are the Aztecs (most likely not), Mongols and Timurids (I have never seen them use anything biggger than the most basic ship available, even far into the game)

Mongol artillery doesn't go further than fire crackers and trebuchets, so their ships must be worthless too.

If you gift a New World Region to a AI faction, will they then sail across the ocean? To reinforce the New World Colonies, or send special elite troops (Conquistadors, Curriaseurs) back to Europe.

I don't think the AI will do it, but I personally had fun conquering the new world as turkey.

to answer your question about amber, if you look at your descr_strat file it will tell you the location of all resources. SEGA/Medieval II/data/world/campaigns/imperial campaign/descr_strat. Hope this helps!

Cheers King William, I've just checked the descr_strat and it appears there are 12 amber sources on the map.

This will certainly prove useful for further such searches.

    Peace.

Mongols and Timurids can't get to the new world because they don't have ships that can sail into deep ocean. The Mongols (and I think also Timurids), only have the lowest level ship, although their navy is still a force to be reckoned with because they have so much money, and sometimes will spam the ocean with cogs.

Aztecs, of course, are unable to build any ships, so are unable to reach the OLD world.
