Default Somali sailors collect largest-ever Ransom

    Source

Somali pirates have released a Greek-flagged oil tanker after receiving millions of dollars in ransom. Sources from among the pirates on Monday confirmed that the Maran Centaurus, one of the largest ships ever hijacked, had been freed.
The pirates agreed to release the vessel after an aircraft dropped at least five million dollars in ransom on the deck.
The ransom, one of the largest ever paid, appeared to have sparked a feud among the priates, delaying the release of the ship.
But Andrew Mwangura, from the East African seafarers assistance programme, said that the vessel had finally been freed on Monday.
"She's free. She's preparing to sail out," he said.

    Ransom payment
Hassan, one of the pirates, told the Reuters news agency: "We have agreed to solve our disagreements and release theship. It is free and sailing away now."
He said that its crew of 16 Filipinos, nine Greeks, two Ukrainians and a Romanian were all safe.
The ransom, delivered on Sunday, was believed to be between $5.5m and $7m.
A $3m ransom was paid for the release of another oil tanker, the Sirius Star, in January 2009. Similar ransoms have been paid subsequently for the release of merchant vessels.
The Maran Centaurus, carrying two million barrels of oil, was captured in November on its way from Kuwait to the US.
World powers, including the European Union, Nato and the United States are running naval patrols off the Somali coast in an effort to protect commercial shipping.
In response, the pirates have extended their reach, attacking ships up to 1,800km from Somalia, deep in the Indian Ocean.

Didn't they get into a fight over the money which left a couple of them dead? I must say that even for the Somali coastguard that's unprofessional.

Yeah but this special coast guard isn't salaried so they had to cut a few guys to make the payout distribution even among members.

Back in the day European states would invade Somalia, they are just sitting there and looking as Somali pirates loot ships. One of them probably looks like that women Jack Sparrow wanted to have children with in that movie about non-Somali pirates.

This is all wrong. The story in the OP hasn't been updated or something because a rival pirate group came in to steal that ransom money and two helicopters from a local warship interviened.

    Story from the AP

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Somali pirates released an oil supertanker and its crew of 28 on Monday after a rival group attacked the hijackers in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the ransom, the European Union naval force said.

The Maran Centaurus was hijacked Nov. 29 about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) off the Somali coast. It was carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil from Saudi Arabia destined for the United States, estimated to be worth roughly $150 million at the time of the attack.

Cmdr. John Harbour, the spokesman for the European Union’s anti-piracy force, said a group of rival pirates had attacked the Greek-flagged Maran Centaurus just before the ransom was being delivered, prompting the pirates onboard the tanker to call for assistance from the anti-piracy force.

Harbour said the EU naval force did not intervene but declined to give details on the actions of other warships in the area. In a statement later, the EU naval force said it dispatched a helicopter to provide any immediate medical assistance to the crew on the ship that is now under naval escort as it leaves Somali waters.

A Somali middleman, who helped negotiate for the release of the ship, says pirates collected $5.5 million Sunday afternoon and left the ship Monday morning. The middleman spoke on condition of anonymity because he said he feared reprisals.

In a statement, the ship’s owner declined to give any details about how it negotiated the release of the Maran Centaurus. The Maran Tankers Management Inc. said the crew are safe and well.

The middleman said pirates in two speedboats attacked the ship Sunday just before the ransom was due to be delivered but after a brief shootout, two helicopters from a warship intervened. The middleman said the two helicopters did not fire at any of the pirates, but only hovered over them, successfully scaring off the attacking group.

A Greek coast guard spokeswoman said the tanker had left Somalia escorted by a Greek frigate and was heading to the South African port of Durban. She said all crew members were in good health, and the ship was expected to reach Durban in a week. She spoke on condition of anonymity in line with Greek government regulations.

The ship, only the second oil tanker captured by Somali pirates, had 9 Greeks, 16 Filipinos, 2 Ukrainians, and a Romanian aboard. Its seizure resurrected fears of an environmental or safety disaster first raised by the capture of the Saudi-owned Sirius Star. That hijacking was resolved in January last year with a $3 million ransom payment. It was carrying 2 million barrels of oil valued at about $100 million at the time.

The International Maritime Bureau said last week that sea attacks worldwide surged 39 percent last year to 406 cases, the highest in six years. Somali pirates raids on vessels accounted for more than half the attacks.

It said that Somali pirates were responsible for 217 of the global attacks and had seized 47 vessels. This was nearly double the 111 attacks Somali pirates launched in 2008, of which 42 were successful hijackings.

The impoverished Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning government for 19 years and the weak U.N.-backed administration is too busy fighting the Islamist insurgency to arrest pirates. Across the Gulf of Aden, tensions between north and south Yemen continue to rise and Islamic militancy is increasing.
Pirates now hold about a dozen vessels hostage and more than 200 crew members.

It doesn't say the terms of the release but I wonder if these pirates got thier hands on that money or not. How amusing that one pirate group was going to steal from another

How is that amusing? What, you think that all pirates in the world have some sort of special brotherly bond or something?

I can honestly not believe there are people here who actually support somali pirates. Oh, and call them "sailors".

What you go to be joking. What's wrong with Britain.

I remember when the danish ship HDMS Absalon was down their hunting pirates, all they could do was disarm them and then send them back home or if they were lucky the could hand them over to the dutch who could, for some reason, charge them of piracy.

Seriously, there's got to be more stick and less carrot as Dr. Zoidberg says. Just sink their damn boats.

    In my personal opinion...

Instead of gathering money to pay the pirates whenever they capture one of our ships, we should instead be paying mercenaries to blow up the pirates wholesale whenever they show their ugly faces - for half the price.

    This man is correct.

It's idiotic to wander about claiming mercs cost too much, or training and equipping select sailors does. It doesn't. All these combined govts that make up the pathetic joke that is the UN need to do is make an actual decision and enforce it.

And if they won't, the nations who have interest in these merchant vessels need to ignore the UN and do it themselves. History has proven that UN declarations mean sweet all, so do it anyway.

Also, the US Navy is bound by the same international restrictions as the other Navies out there. I wish it was easy as engaging the pirates with .50 cal fire, but it isn't...
I guess then we just have to agree that we won't get mad at each other for killing pirates. The countries involved in the pirate 'hunting' are the countries that MADE-UP the international laws in the first bloody place.

I always find it amusing when people in power complain about being hamstrung by laws. Laws that they invented. Uninvent them, or suspend them, or strike them down, there are all kinds of ways to deal with that problem.

P.S.: If you really think about naval vessels sinking pirate boats in open water wouldn't leave much proof anyway. Sure people can claim that all the pirates that have mysteriously dissapeared were killed by naval forces but who knows maybe they just sank, or the sea gods were upset with them, all kinds of nasty things can happen to boats.

Mercs, what are they gonna do? They were smacked around by Iraqi teenagers, they have no chance against seasoned sea combatants. Blackwater should stick to chauffeur duties.

The west, deserves it after how they raped, and continue to rape Somalia. Italian ships are dumping toxic waste around Somalia as we speak, killing the fishing industry. My only complaint about the pirates is that they kill each other too much.

Who the are 'the west'? I'm from Western Europe but I have had nothing to do with Somalia. I'm not Italian so I am not dumping a damn thing. I also rather doubt that every Italian citizen has taken a boatload of toxic waste down and dumped it into Somali waters...If there are even such a thing considering Somalia doesn't have a government to speak of and without any central authority don't really have any sovereignity(at least not to lay claim to national waters, at the moment with the way things are it's old school rules and folks own what they can keep hold of).

All of the goddamned 'white' and 'Western' apologists and poor pitiful me whiners(usually white 'Westerners' themselves or butthurt folks from the former Communist bloc)need to be shipped off to an island and firebombed. Hell even better idea, lets ship them all to Somalia, then firebomb it down to the bedrock...two problems solved at the same time.

Get over it. 'We' 'won'(at least until someone else wins)and sitting around crying about it isn't doing anyone a bit of good. Instead of waiting for the big mean evil 'West' to come swooping in to fix all the wrongs ever done to everyone everywhere, everyone should work on fixing their own problems.

    I bet there's a bumper sticker.
"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Jesus, that's quite the booty they got there. They better start looking like real pirates now, none of this AK/RPG/Lifevest malarkey.
