They have Cavalry? You dont? Suggest ambush on battlemap.

Now surely you can ambush on the battle field - but I like this becasue you dont end up stranding
a group(s) and you are sure these are well placed to encounter the enemy force.

As French been dealing with the N.American native tribes.
I dont carry alot of cavalry so when when I am defending I have taken to deploying troops on flank in just advanced on my front line in a hidden posture. But within range of main lines fire zone.
Turn off the fire at will for hidden troops.

When their cavalry comes, on the flank usually, I let them advance into the fire zone of
hidden troops and wait until they are just within fire zone of my main line.

It micromanaging the timing. But tell hidden units to fire when enemy gets in range of main line.
Instant carnage ensues followed almost quickly Routing.

On a related note, when fighting against an army without much cavalry, it's very doable to hide two or more horses in a wood and position your line so that when the opponent marches towards it, it will pass that wood in a distance that won't allow them to detect your cav.
Then, once their line is engaged in the firefight with yours, charge your cav to attack their rear.

It's also nice to have a cannon hidden where their flank will be so you can shoot along their line.

I hide the best guys(is this the right thing to do?) in a foreste and camp beside it. The enemy comes forward and after one-third of the enemy army dies(or when I m doing badly), I let them wild and it will change the course of the battle and war
