Icon9 Please help me guys, I'm RAGEing..

Hello guys. I had read these forums before, never made an account because I was not really interested in posting. I'm a fan of TW series, I've played RTW like mad, then BI, Alexander, M2TW and now, I installed Kingdoms and SS 6.2.4. RTW and it's expansions worked wonderfully, no problems with them, until I had a serious problem with the computer and I had to reinstall all of my software.

After that, Rtw and it's expansions started to CTD while on the campaign map, it was unplayable. Especially when it happens after a very long battle and you don't manage to save the game on time. I said, oh well, I'll go to M2TW, surely that will go away.. . Same thing here, and even after Kingdoms and SS (who was supposed to fix all that CTDs I think), the same damn crap.

This is one of my favourite series ever and I can't play it.. I don't want to play only custom battles, I want that 'in campaign map

Sry guys for raging like this, but I'll literally die if I don't solve it. Until now, I've tried updating all the drivers, same thing. Windows Event Viewer doesn't generate an error for this and I don't find any relevant log file in M2 directory for SS. If anyone has an idea with what is going on, I will deeply apreciate it. Also, if anyone knows how can I debug the error or at least see what is causing the error, maybe I can work from there. I know some programming and know how software works, but I don't know how to log the error.

I know for surely it is a software problem because it worked before the windows reinstall on the same hardware. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTION, PLEASE POST ;/ I'm on Win xp SP2, P4 2400Mhz, 1 GB RAM, 7300GT on AGP. DirectX is 9.0c. If anyone of you needs extra info, just tell me which program needs to collect it.

Edit: I'll try to read all the responses frequently. This is NOT a first & last post from me, never to read the thread again. So please post if you have anything of use. Thank you..

I think you can better ask this in the technically help forum, there are more guys who might have a solution.

Vista might also do it. I never had trouble with Kingdoms after I had updated my drivers. (I can't play vanilla MTW2 nor mods for MTW2, but that's not troubling me)

The CTDs are not battle related, they are campaign map related. I have all the advisors turned off anyway. Before the Win xp reinstall, I had also the SP2 and it worked well. I don't think this is the problem.. But this reminded me of something, before I had SP2 + a ton of patches issued from Microsoft (some of them who may have been part of SP3) manually installed, can anyone confirm if one of those is the fix ?

You are right, please an admin move this thread to the correct forum. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Are you suggesting me to upgrade to Vista ? Well, at my father's home, I installed there an Vista x64 and RTW and it worked perfectly, no CTDs in campaign map. But this is not an option for me, I have a weak rig. My drivers are up to date.

First thing is uninstall Rome, BI, Alex, Medieval2, Kingdoms, delete all their folders, run registry cleaner to get out the garbage because you won't need the overhead.

    1. Run Windows Update including all the optional software it finds. If you just did a reinstall and did not Windows Update yourself, you missed a lot. Run it again until it comes up with no more. It will update directx, .Net and Windows Media Player and the games need all of them.

    2. Update your Nvidia drivers if they have one for yours. Uninstall the old drivers, run Driver Sweeper in safe mode, then install.

    3. Install the games and hopefully have fun.

    Good luck.

Reinstalling the games won't do the trick because after my initial problem with XP, I formated ALL the drives and reinstalled a clean XP version, and then the drivers and the games. And you start with a clean registry so.. I didn't corrupt anything, it never worked after the new Win XP, it always CTD'ed in campaign map, both RTW based games and also the M2TW based games.

1.Well, I'm not sure about installing all the updates available, some of them are useless for me.. before the reinstall, I manually downloaded the ones I needed. As for DirectX, .Net and WMP, I manually updated them and still it didn't work. Btw, I read all the possible suggestions on the Tech Forums a month ago, and one of them was to update manually DirectX, .Net and WMP..

    2. I did that some time before, still didn't work.

    3. I don't think this would work either, I have 2 other computers at different places, one a very old one, much worser than mine and they don't CTD on the campaign map.

If you didn't read my 1st post, I want to add that all those games never CTD in any way before the reinstall of Win XP. I'll guess I'll try to update Windows, but it's a long shot. While I do this, can anyone provide me with a tool so I can debug the game ? But not using low level debuggers like ollydbg because that won't be too helpful. Something that can show me what is the exact high level error or at least what is causing it.

Also I want to mention that the CTDs are very erratic, sometimes I get one some seconds after loading the game, and sometimes the games works for 2 hours without a crash (this is somewhat rarely). But they ruin always ruin the game, especially after I micromanage all my units/cities/agents and then exactly when I want to save, CTD

I know you are trying to help irishron and I thank you, but except the other Win Updates, those other suggestions I did them and some of them won't help me.

I made a log file with all the programs installed in my PC with the free tool Belarc Advisor (a PC auditing tool). Two more things: M2TW and Kingdoms are patched to the latest versions, and RTW&expansions are not listed because i Rage-uninstalled them one month ago to make room for M2TW (which I thinked will no longer have this CTD problem.. well, I thinked wrong ). But I guess that if you can fix the CTD for M2TW, it will be fixed for RTW also.. and vice-versa Here we go:

Electronics Arts loves SecuRom and Command and Conquer might to cnflict with SecuRom in Medieval2 and Kingdoms.

Torrents and emulation software like Power ISO are considered illegal by Sega.

This is why. I'm just the messenger. Any complaints, please take it up with them.

God.. I deleted all EA games and still nothing (from registry too). uTorrent and Power ISO I had them before the XP reinstall and RTW and M2TW worked perfectly (I never used Power ISO in a 'Total War' related way and don't have other imaging tools). I don't really understand your last sentences. "This is why..." Does M2TW check for Disc image utilities or virtual drives ? Can that be the problem ? I hope not.. If you are sure about this, I'll delete them.

I'm not sure I'm allowed to say this on forums, but after this, let's say I tried without Securom and with a fixed exe. And it's the same.. it stills CTD on the campaign map So this also can't be the problem I guess..

Also, SS.system.log.txt doesn't log any error when CTDing. Is there a method that I can use to log the error ? Or a program ? In a more high-level way, debugging in assembler won't be too useful because probably the executable is protected/encrypted/obfuscated and even if you manage to work around these, understanding the error is extremely time consuming. If you can help me on this one, I may be able to solve it on my own. Thanks..

Now I really wish I didn't had to reinstall my XP back then..

Some players have had to reinstll XP.

If you can't play Medieval2 1.0 unpatched, without a ctd, you are not going to play Stainless Steel.

Try to reinstall it without the goodies. If they use rootkits like SecuRom, you may have to contact them anyway to play.

I updated Win XP with SP3 + other patches (it's exactly like my old machine), still the same.. I'll try to debug it so I can get to the problem. I'll also investigate the Securom theory just in case.. Thanks for trying to help irishron. I owe you one. If I ever find the fix, I'll post it here so others can know the solution. Or you can lock the thread, it's up to you.

Check out log files, go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

if you can't find anything there, make sure your system logger is activated.

Also, look for minidump files (minidump.dmp), use built-in search engine for *.dmp files, tick "hidden/system" files. They are in your WINDOWS folder. You may need Debugging Tools for Windows to open .dmp files.

Anyway, i would start from there. If you're still unable to find out the problem, install advanced system logger writing down literally every EVENT on the comp, run the game and then read the logs again.

    It is activated, no entry.

Well, the game 'handles' the error by itself and then exits so no minidump generated. I think you need to trigger the Windows "send error report bla bla" to get a chance to save a minidump. Also, minidumps are automatically generated only when BSODs happen afaik. What is the name of the 'advanced system logger' ? That would be VERY useful.
