Default Can someone take a look?!

Ok so I recently uninstalled all TW's from my computer(winter cleaning if you will) and now I am faced with a problem. Now before posting suggestions you need to know that I am pretty savvy when it comes to computers(except networking) but I just cant figure this one out. I have cleaned and re cleaned my computer with ccleaner and alike, I cleaned the prefetch data, searched for any missed files left by RTW but did not find any. It is not such a big deal since I have TW's installed on my main PC back home where I will be in 15 days so I can simply copy and paste the game from one to another but thats not the point. Its just pissing me off that I have this. So anyway can you guys take a look and see if you have some ideas.

P.S. In picture 3 I am trying to install the game not uninstall but I dont get a choice as you can see.

In picture 6 you see an error which is a bit blurry but here is what it says: " Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\windows\installer\Rome - Total War(TM).msi" Really Sherlock? You know why? Cause its not there!

Last picture is of ccleaner finding 196 problems within the registry after I run the install that you see in the first 6 picture!

Have you checked for remaining RTW left-overs in the registry?

    RUN->"Regedit"
    Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Wow6432Node > The Creative Assembly/Activision

If RTW is still there, it might cause some problems when installing/uninstalling.

@DVK thanks mate. I a using win 7 but I get your point.I dont know what I am going to do yet, will probably just wait 15 days and copy the rtw from my main PC the thing is everything else runs smoothly.

P.S. I have one drive(its a laptop) but the rtw is an im@ge file so I m@unt it with daemon tools.

Do you have multiple CD and\or DVD drives in the PC? Sometimes, Windows can be very spastic figuring out that you CAN install something from any one of them if you want, but doesn't allow you to because IT has decided that the only one you can use is the one you originally used. The error you posted "Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\windows\installer\Rome - Total War(TM).msi" suggests that Windows is trying to find that file on a drive 'somewhere' other than where you are trying to install from. When it can't find it, it just spits out an error based (normally) on the only drive it can 'think' of, which is usually the 'C' drive.

Another possibility is that your Windows install has lost it's 'path'. Let me explain. In My Computer properties there is under an advanced tab the option to see the Windows path. Windows considers the path to be the 'C' drive, the Windows directory and the System32 directory. Now, you can go in there and look at that path and it will SAY that the path is OK....you could even go into the registry and IT will all look OK.....but it isn't. Somewhere in that path there is some 'invisible giberish' that Windows can't read, and it is ALWAYS in the user profile part of the registry. (Hopefully, you are not using the 'Administrator' account as your account, or you could be deeply screwed.) This 'invisible giberish' caused literally hundreds of PC's where I used to work to be destroyed by a new version of PcAnywhere we were installing.....because the &*^% installer couldn't find the right path, it just decided to completely whack the ControlSet in the registry and kill the PC dead. I actually ended up finding this out myself, and then had to 'convince' Symantec that their idiot installer really should be able to install without destroying the PC just because it can't find the path statement!! (Only one of many reasons a Symantec product never touches my PC.)

The ensuing result of this path problem is that Windows doesn't know where anything is.....including the 'temp' directory where your installer just put that .msi file. (Stupid Windows. ) I've actually had this happen to my own PC at home, using Windows XP, and one of the weird behaviors it caused was installing ANYTHING.

Anyway, the only way to fix this is to backup whatever you want out of the account you are using on the PC, then log on as the Administrator, delete the old profile, and then create a new one. This will reset the path to what it should be. Most of your programs should still work fine except for the really stupid ones. And BTW, CCleaner is a great, powerful, and dangerous program in the wrong hands. Heehee. But it cannot fix this problem.

I've used CCleaner and its a great program but as DVK said it can be dangerous in the wrong hands. But Dvk I havant encountered this kind of problem before does this kind of error only happen in like XP or does it happen in vista and in Win 7. The reason why I ask because I like to learn about all these little windows errors so I can be more helpful in the future not just here but also at my job

I have only seen this 'rarely'....but it's one of those things that makes you scratch your head for a while and wonder. I have also ONLY seen it happen in WindowsXP....but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen to Vista or Windows7. I have little experience with either one, so I don't know.

The issue with multiple CD's and Windows refusing to let you reinstall from a 'different' CDROM in your PC than the one you originally used is pretty uncommon. I suspect that a person having this kind of problem with a Windows install had best think about reinstalling, because for some reason Windows is refusing to update the registry properly.

Loss of the path statement is just plain bizarre. We wrote a reg file to replace the path statement on all our PC's when we were trying to fix this, and it didn't work. The reason is (apparently) that if the information in the reg file is already there (according to Windows), it won't replace it (even though it TELLS you it did). So we had to write a script that whacked the path statement out of the registry, and then run the reg file to put it back. That worked, but in reality, it was only a temporary fix. People having THAT problem were likely to have others, so recreating their Profile was the best solution.

Quite frankly, I would recommend that anyone having issues or weird behavior with a Windows install FIRST try recreating their Profile (or the one they are using). This actually fixes a lot of problems, because the user profile is constantly in a state of change, and is a different part of the Registry 'hive'. It can get corrupted by viruses, spyware, malware, etc., or by a simple 'mistake' on Window's part when it wrote something to it, or by a power failure, turning off your PC without a proper shutdown, etc. etc.

Wow that is a massive hassle just to fix it and it was only a temporary fix. So basically its the way the windows operating system was written that can cause this rare issue. Since you wrote a reg file and it refuses to replace it then that is real bizarre. But also even if you create a new profile it does not really fix the problem for it can come up again. or if you re install the entire OS it can still come up so I guess its just a random thing that happens on windows due in part to Microsofts programming...Looks like its just one of those things

Win 7. I love the new 7 and have used it since May. Vista was a joke I really despise the thing, how can a company release something that is half finished and full of bugs is beyond me.

I see nothing wrong with Vista. My mom got 7, and it looks nearly identical. The only differences I found were in the task bar and the changing desktop background. Those could both be added to Vista I am sure. Other than those two, everything seemed exactly the same. What really changed? So far, we have both had the same amount of bugs happen, zero.

win 7 performance is much better. I have two laptops on one them is pretty old and has one gig of ram, I used to put Vista on it after it came out and I swear it was driving me crazy, every single task was so slow seemed like id asked it to do something impossible but I have just recently put win 7 on it and it runs as if thought it has XP installed. I dont use it much mind you but I still muck about with it, trust me win 7 is much better you say your mom has it but you have Vista right. Try it out just day to day things, I mean everyone likes different things so you might not enjoy it but I really like it.
