    Default Silvan Diplomacy Pointers...

I cannot get anyone to ally me or to do anything diplomatic whatsoever. My best diplomat (8/10 diplomacy) cant even get map information for map information from anyone, an even trade. My reputation isnt bad either, mixed. And my relations with those i try to engage in diplomacy with are poor at worst. But many of them are neutral, good and so-so. Need help if anyone can the AI is too damn stubborn.

Don't just ask for items and such. Give them a gift first like map location and a little bit of money. Be at war with their enemy. Then when you enter negotiations and give them map info again and request such things as trade or alliances.

i know this problem. in vanilla you could go to another faction in the first 3 turns
of a campaign and offer them map-information, trade rights, an alliance and military
access and get map-information and military access back from them. and it work on
every faction with your own religion and sometimes even on religious "enemies".

but in TATW this is not possible but for good reason. as you already know in TATW
an alliance really means something, because you cant attack an allied faction like
you could in vanilla. and the AI cant either. to get an alliance in TATW seems to be
as hard as getting an enemy to become your vassal. and in 1.4 i think they even
hardened the chance of diplomatic negotiations except for trade rights.

but to get alliances you should think of some different facts:

    • i think the reputation and other stats of your faction leader effecting the negotiations
    • than the diplomacy rank of your diplomat
    • the relation to the faction
      .
    • i think there might be a counter system for reputation
    • than your faction_standings (from the descr_strat.txt) effect the chance of successful negotiations

ways to try to get alliances:

    • the easiest way is to trade a (or in some cases two) settlement(s) against an alliance
(no matter what settlement - could be even far far away)
(but the longer the campaign is running already, the settlement has to be a bigger one - no village )
(by the way - it is no bad idea to conquer back settlement and give them to its original owner)
    • than money is a good argument - again it depends how far you are in your campaign.
but for me it always worked with about 20.000+ mixed with map-informations or other stuff you have to offer
    • i don't know if this is true but offering to attack an enemy faction does never help your
negotiations - on the contrary - it seems to have bad effect on your reputation the same way as
      rejected negotiations
(opportunism seems to be a bad thing in middle earth - it is something that humans do and humans are really bad )

Play as an Elf: Don't kill the prisonners, free them. It will help in allying with other races.

I'm currently playing Rohan and well I know a way to ally without spending thousands of golden coins to convince your friends... just rush an diplomat to say Eriador then offer them trade rights. Then do this every turn: Offer alliance/military acces/map information single payment of 3500. Repeat this a few turns and you will see that your reputation will go up now simply do this until your reputation is perfect and they will finnaly accept it. Atleast they did in my campaign Good luck. Btw they don't accept it but still they are very happy with your offer, until they are so happy that they cant refuse it anymore Have... To... Accept... This... Excellent... Offer.... Can't... Resist.... ahhh finnaly...

I thought they removed repercussions for killing evil as good in 1.4 (execute prisoners)

And thank you for all the help so far

I've played all factions, and I have found that both Silvans and OoMM have a terrible diplomacy, at least at start. You can't get alliances. It's a fact of life for these factions so better get used to it.

However, still try to get other treaties with neighbors. Trade and maps (although the latter is also a bit difficult at start). Getting trade will make them a little more inclined to be friendly. Don't propose alliances first thing in a negotiation, they'll refuse and they will likely not be interested in anything else you offer. Get the trade (they usually agree to that) once that's secured try for maps, if that's OK ask for an alliance. You don't need to do it over several turns, you can do it in the same negotiation.

After a while of having trade, plus being nice to them (not intruding in their territory etc.), plus having common enemies, plus getting a rep (being large and powerful and getting victories), ask again. Eventually they accept. Sometimes they come to you and propose it.

The faction that is more likely to give in and accept an alliance early on (but not right away) is the High Elves.

Don't talk to kings and other high-ranking generals. Their command rating is compared to your diplomat's influence and it affects the chances of a successful negotiation. Instead, always chat up with captains. They have no command stars and your diplo uses his full influence.

If you have trade rights, offer 1000 for 10 turns. I have 100% success rate so far with that offer in 1.4. playing as the Silvans.
