    Default Chants (Gregorian)

    Hey all,

You guys know I'm into heavier modern stuff (smirk if you want) but I have a softer (and rather unexplainable) side to my musical tastes, and that is chanting.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The main problem I have is that I can never find it outside the web and in formats I can download. CDs are the next best option but most of the ones I find in the bookstores are just kind of crappy American choirs doing it. It leaves a lot to be desired. I'm interested mainly in choral chanting, and strictly the "Catholic" sort.

So, can anyone here point me in the right direction for getting my hands on a CD or a downloadable album/compilation? I've seen several on European websites, but I can't really afford the shipping from Europe (probably another major problem, eh?)

Are there any choirs or monasteries in America worth looking into? The Monastery near my house doesn't have a bookstore and consequently no music...

If you can find one, Christian bookstores (despite how much they hate me ) have friendly enough staff that they'll point you in the right direction usually. If all else fails, there are a few on Amazon but the names of the album escape me atm. Also some of the major churches usually have a gift shop - these will advertise the presence of a gift shop too.

I know Cappella Romana have some awesome Byzantine chant, and Western chant mixed in amongst their CDs.

Gregorian is ok. Try Mozarabic, or better Ambrosian.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

I like the eastern stuff, but not as much as traditionally western choirs. It seems to me the sound comes much more from the chest where eastern chanting seems to come more from the throat. There are other subtle differences, eastern chants tend to be a bit more monotone, which for chanting isn't a bad thing at all, it just comes down to preference and I prefer to have a little pitch variation.

Hmm... never understand you Imperial slaves, since the sound of chainaxe cut through your neck is good enough to please me.

I love all chants as well, including Gregorian. But I myself prefer the old fashioned mysticism of Orthodox Greek and slavic chants.

I'm an Imperial Guard fan myself, our chants are mostly composed of "RUN AWAY!" in alternating pitches, with a boltgun shot from a Commissar thrown in for good measure.
