put them in citeis and make big churches or send them on a crusade to antioch os jerusalem and they get retinue for piety
I believe having a priest, bishop, or cardinal travelling in any army a general commands also helps increase that general's piety.
It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles.
And put a general in a city in witch a church is just finishing building, there is a chance u get extra piety for being there for the completion of churches.
patch your game... on 1.00 i got 4-5 piety generals killed by inquisitors.

Spoiler for Dangerous stuff:
Putting a priest with your general's army while they're on the march is the best method to do this along with Crusades/Jihads.
Jihads and Crusades will give you certain traits that influence this (i.e. Pilgrim to Jerusalem), having a priest in your army gives you certain traits which I cannot recall. I haven't tried this much as I would much rather throw my priest in a place where he is needed and forget all about him (Just replace him when he dies).

Good things come to those who wait... But better things come to those who never hesitate.
Keeping a priest in the army with a general
Going on, and succeeding on crusades
Building Churchs
Being governor of a city that has a frequently high happiness
Constructing building that improve health and happiness in a settlement.
All of those will add to piety.
Thx for the answers!
I noticed when having a general in a city with a cathedral, he will gain piety after several turns.
And about that going on a crusade thing; had a very funny experience some turns ago. Had a general with some traits (dont remember the correct name) but he was as crazy as a fool. Trait said they couldnt do anything with hem... So I send him on to the holy land and he finished a successful crusade. Now, after a wile killing of Muslims, hes one my best generals ever...stats going trough the roof...but still mad...
Have another question; can a general with dread gain piety?
Yes, a general with dread can gain piety. One does not affect the other. The reason chivalry seems to accompany piety a lot is because of the Crusading traits.
