    Default Rep Hit!

I was part of a block of alliances, Scotland-France-PapalStates-Sicily. We were all allied with each other, i play the Irish and was trustworthy. Then Scotland decided to break the alliance, and a few turns later attack me. Didn`t mind just that i lost all my other allies except Sicily. I was in perfect relations with all of them.

First of all I don`t agree me taking a rep penalty because Scotland decided to wage war. Why would i take the penalty and not them, and why do the allies leave me if i`m in perfect relations for Scotland.

    This sucks a lot.

So my big question is, what`s happening ?

Kay...well for starters what mods are you using and what settings? Remember anytime your allies war against each other you will be asked to pick a side and visa versa. We take rep hits every time this happens. {don't know how much though} That's why I keep my allies few and try and make sure I can keep them. {they won't declare war on other allies.} If you ally with the Pope, anytime one of his allies declares war on you, he will drop you like a rotten potato. Remember at the end of the day the AI ain't supposed to be your friend...

Well, I can understand why they would pick Scotland over you - even with perfect relations. That France probably values Scotland higher as an ally than you seems understandable assuming they (France) are - as usual - at war with England. The Pope often acts a bit erratic, so better not try to understand His Holiness' reasoning...

On a more general note, your allies (former that is) have to pick one side, why not your enemies side? And that you lose rep for being betrayed is a bit unfair, but just assume that your former allies don't leave you without a reason...

You did not take the rep hit because Scotland decided to wage war with you, but because of the broken alliances.

Every broken alliance has impact on your rep. Same when 2 of your own allies decide to fight each other, from that moment you can support only one of those factions and you have to choose. For the alliance that breaks at that point you will suffer a rep penalty. Same with AI factions, and that seems exactly what happened to you since you were all allied with each other. Sicily, Papal States and France just decided to continue to support Scotland instead of you.

I admit it's a bit strange sometimes and I do not know which factors influence this.

However, when a faction decides to wage war on you depends on a lot factors (relations is only one factor): your strenght, amount of territories, how much units you have in border territories, global rep, how easy it is to attack you (in terms of range, length of border etc.). It's a lot more likely that Scotland attacks you as Ireland instead of the HRE for instance, since they haven't really much else to wage war on in that corner of the map.

Though the AI is not always predictable (and that's a good thing), and it seems strange indeed when having perfect relations.

England is no more, that`s why scotland waged war with me in the first place, furthermore the scots have almost the entire north coast of western europe, what france must want, thus making frances option of allying with the scots even more dumb. The pope must love me, i basically turned catholic all west-northen africa, and yes, my papal favor is maxed out.

Thing is, now with no allies playing with Ireland, pretty undeveloped, and waging war on two fronts. On one, against the moors portugal and spain, and on the other with scotland and France looks pretty menacing now... my situation looks pretty dark. Spain, Portugal, Scotland and even the battered up moors, all field about half a dozen full stacks each. i barely have 2 in africa and one in Nottingham. Loosing really looks like an option now. And i`m a colonies kind of guy, i hoped that i could start a new colony in the holy lands soon, but that won`t happen now.

GRRR, i prob get what happened but it`s hard to accept , I guess it was suppose to happen at vh/vh. Otherwise it wouldn`t be very hard to win.

    Yeah I see...

Well for a human it's indeed irrational, but that's the thing... It's AI. It has no memory, it can not balance it's interests as well as you (it takes only a few parameters into account), so that may result in some apparantly strange decisions. Maybe (if you're wealthy) you can force a ceasefire, or give some territory. If you're relationship with Scotland is still reasonable and you're global rep hasn't suffered that much it might succeed.

    Good luck

    @ Mega Tortas: Thanks!

vh campaign? you should have told us that from the start. there is only one line in the CAI script for vh, and that is dogpile_player = true. On medium I have declared war on neighbors and had mutual allies keep their alliances with me (6.2 rr/rc). Not so much for higher difficulties

ya...I play SS6.2 on medium and I find you still get into plenty of trouble if you turtle. The Pope is hard wired to drop you if your friends. But at the end of the day you can still maintain a decent rep if you throw enough money around and be over-chivalrous {release prisoners, and that kind of thing}.
