Check out Youth In Revolt.
I'm always surprised when his name appears on the credits, the way he immerses himself into every role is simply amazing.
Who knew there were so many ways to look bewildered?

The kid is taking advantage of his overused character actor status and has become a star with it. It annoys the hell out of me, but I'll give him props for making the money while the money is good.

I think a lot of it is him, or his agent, picking the roles. Everything in entertainment these days basically does the same thing over and over again but just a tad different every time until it stops making money. Basically, I think it's about making the $$$ rather than maturing as an actor. I'm sure Cera could find different roles for himself if he tried to do it, but it's safer for him to stay with what is making him the money. Why risk his reputation - as if it's a great one - by trying a different role?

Well that's what I said. If nobody would be making these movies or writing these characters for Cera to inherit, he could not keep playing them. The ones who keep wanting to make money are primarily the studios after all and as long as they feel the awkward Cera is selling, they keep going down that road till his first movie bombs and everybody goes "oh no, it's not cool anymore, stop casting him" and that, at the latest, would be when he needs to expand.
That said, him having an alter ego in this movie, as the confident and vulgar Francois Dillinger is at least a small step forward.
I'd say it's the same for almost everything in Hollywood right now.
Judd Apatow has made a million of the same comedies and is making more, Seth Rogen is in a million, crappy yet money making movies get sequels (i.e. Pirates, Transformers, etc.), superhero movies are being pumped out like babies from Mormon mothers (no offense to Mormons), every childhood classic is being remade, and now vampires have taken over. The studios are milking the money while they can. They know that they can always move onto the next reusable idea in the future.
Luckily, there are a few actually original and good movies that come out every year.

I thought the title was being sarcastic at first
me too. still not sure tbh.
If he wasn't George Michael Bluth, I think I'd hate Michael Cera. That's the only character he's ever played, and that was the first incarnation of that character. Every thing else after is just a bastardization of the same character, with swears and sex jokes thrown in for the edgy teen crowd. I'm just waiting for the Arrested Development movie at this point - Superbad was the last time a Cera vehicle has done anything for me.
The kid got typcast, it happens, hate the system not the actor. You look at the guy and he just fits the roles. Wait till he grows up and maybe he fit other roles.
I'm not 100% convinced that he could pull off anything else though. I do agree with you, the blame largely lies with the people making the movie (as Rapax has outlined - he wouldn't keep playing the same part if people didn't keep writing the part [in all likelihood, with him already in mind]).
It will be interesting to see just how different his Francois character is to his usual fare.
