Default 82nd Airborne finally gets to Haiti after being turned around 15 years ago

In 1994 after a military coupe in Haiti, the US launched pressure against the military to restore the democratic leader. Negotiations failed to go well until the US negotiator revealed to the leader of the coupe that the 82nd Airborne was in the air. At that point the coupe leaders backed down and the 82nd Airborne, mid flight, was turned around.

Now under different circumstances the 82nd Airborne (and other US Army elements), US Marines, US Air Force, US Coast Guard and US Naval forces are being deployed to support relief efforts.

I give it 10 posts before somebody makes some stupid post about this being an attempt to take over Haiti.

Why would anyone want to take over something what is perfectly under control already.

It's all in a day's work for bicycle repairman.

haiti's stability is too important for the US, if they aren't helped, a huge flood of refugee will come to American shores overnight.

Well...as of today both the USS Carl Vinson and USNS Comfort are on station just off Port-Au-Prince's shoreline.

The Vinson has it's own water purification plant and even traded off its fighter wing for something like two dozen heavy lift helicopters, while the Comfort is one of the world's largest dedicated hospital ships.

People love to bash America, but in every worldwide crisis you see their navy and military appearing. You never see the Chinese navy rolling up, or the Russian navy. Always the Americans, that is so easily forgotten by the anti-america brigade.

Even after the huge Tsunami, America was everywhere helping. Not sure that it means those they helped have a better view of America.

    Indeed.

Now let's just hope that crappy runway holds up for all the supplies and humanitarian personnel they will be landing.

Good to see the military getting involved, I am not sure why they haven't put Southern Command in charge of the relief effort, it would be much more efficient in my opinion to do so.

SOUTHCOM is in charge of the military part of the relief effort, but US AID will probably lead the over all effort. That, FEMA or State.

Indeed southern command has been placed under the command of USAID (as of now FEMA is pretty much being told to stay out of this one because it is not a US disaster from what the news has reported). However southern command is running police actions, is in charge of air landings, and logistics so it almost seems it would be more efficient to give them independence on many of the air landings and police actions so they don't have to run it all through USAID, supposedly there are airplanes stuck on the runways right now because they don't have fuel and other planes are being turned away due to backups and delays in the coordination of flights, some of it due to having to run liaisons through USAID. For now it seems best if southern command was in charge of its own actions in cooperation with USAID, which is mostly carrying out other missions. Not to mention within the first few days southern command was sitting around waiting for orders from USAID. Right now southern command is powerless to do anything without being told to explicitly by USAID.

Jesus Christ I've been to busy to follow the news but I just looked an estimated minimum 40,000 - 50,000 dead? Out of 10 million? That is cataclysmic!

ing hell. Good on you USA. I hope my country is helping too.

We've written a cheque for AUD $10 million, which is a start. I don't know whether we'll be sending any military aid. Logistically, Haiti is pretty hard for us to get to quickly. Who knows though?
