In 1994 after a military coupe in Haiti, the US launched pressure against the military to restore the democratic leader. Negotiations failed to go well until the US negotiator revealed to the leader of the coupe that the 82nd Airborne was in the air. At that point the coupe leaders backed down and the 82nd Airborne, mid flight, was turned around.
Now under different circumstances the 82nd Airborne (and other US Army elements), US Marines, US Air Force, US Coast Guard and US Naval forces are being deployed to support relief efforts.
