    Good news:
Sounds like you can create protectorates by taking capitols! Good news!
"Fortunately, I can take the nearby capital of Turin and subjugate the entire Piedmont-Sardinia faction. Now that they've become a protectorate of France, it's easy enough to spend a few thousand in cash to get them to declare war on the Austrians as well."
So hopefully if you take Warsaw from the Russians or whatever, you'll be able to make it your protectorate and have a Grand Duchy of Warsaw! Granted this isn't exactly the same thing as what's described in the article, but if they have the architecture to create protectorates after you take the region capitol, I'd imagine there is the infrastructure to create protectorates of emergents? Maybe/hopefully. Still this is a huge improvement.

I don't like the sound of taking a capital means defeating a faction.

I assume you still force protectorate by defeating their armies in battles, like you can now.

Since this is coming from IGN, I'll remain quite sceptical. ETWs release proved just how close SEGA and IGN are.

If for some strange reason this is true and actually makes the release, cool.
The extra development time will allow us to finalize and polish Empire, making it the most accomplished and epic of the Total War series." said Kieran Brigden, Studio Communications Manager at The Creative Assembly. "There is a great deal of anticipation around Empire: Total War and we want to ensure that it is the benchmark for strategy games upon its release.

Yeah, but how is CA going to account the times where taking cities did not ensure the surrender of several factions? Like Spain for instance?

The follow-up to last year's fantastic Empire: Total War will change things up a bit in presenting a story-based series of campaigns that track Napoleon's career from an ambitious artillery officer to the Emperor of France.
    hmmm...

Good point. I guess it would best be represented as a protectorate's rebels also being at war with you. So if you take the Spanish capitol and make them your protectorate, the populace could still be unhappy and revolt against them, they'd just be less likely to then if you directly controlled Spain. But then the rebels would be at war with both you and Spain (as your protectorate).

Great I saw a Santa drummer in one of the Screen-shots. Its the one with the cannon shooting into the charging British Infantry. Probably old news but thought I'd point it out. On the plus side that's an old picture from like 2 months ago.
