I think he has to be IN Rome.
Besides, isn't that only for generals?

Good things come to those who wait... But better things come to those who never hesitate.
Oh right I thought if i went in the province i would get it. Thinking about it now it might only be for generals as i was basing it of the pope but he technicaly is a general himself.
what are the bonuses btw?
as far as i am aware, there are 3 pilgrim traits.
Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Rome.
For Santiago, you only need to spend a turn in a road near Leon.
I think the same applies to the others.
BTW, you gain Piety.
So, it increases piety rate by +2.;------------------------------------------

Chance of getting this is 50%.
The effects of visiting Jerusalem are different for different religions. Visiting Jerusalem provides the biggest piety bonus.
@Halbard: no, it's not enough. It requires ending the turn in the specific city.
And there are more than 3...
-Jerusalem
-Leon
-Rome
-Constantinople
-Mecca
-Medina

There is also a change of "failure", in that case your general will loose one piety. Not sure about the changes, but I don't think it happens very often.

Sat grieving at the cost of coals;
For Hell had been annexed of late,
And was a sovereign Southern State.
So would you have to take Rome to pilgrimage there?
Yeppers.... Once you take Rome any visiting General/family Member will receive + 2 to Chivalry via "pilgrimage to Rome." Don't any of you dare give it back. Stick the Pontiff in Sardinia, Corsica, Innsbruck, or the vacation spot of your choice...Spoiler Alert, click show to read:![]()
