Thorgrim couldn't remember a fog like this, creeping out of the dark hills to the north engulfing everything in pale shades, the woods around him seemed to hold their breath, no breeze no sounds, nothing.
'Ok Thorgrim doesn't like this', he thought. As he checked his gear he decided the 6 rabbits he had snared were enough, 'ill get no deer in this fog anyway'.
Thorgrim padded off in search of the camp.
'I must have gotten turned around' he said to himself as he reached an empty glade where dingle his pony should have been. He quicky checked the moss on a stump in the middle of the glade and started off west, 'once i reach the stream i can head south to the ford and then ill be right'.
As he jogged through the trees he spotted something and froze, just ahead stood a young doe. Thorgrim slowly unslung his bow, thoughts of venison stew with carrots and parsnips making his mouth water, as he brought the arrow to his cheek he saw the deer more closely, the only movement from the beast was like it was quivering all over, its eyes were wild, the whites showing too much, but it was looking north not at thorgrim.
As he scanned pale shadows of trees through the fog beyond the deer he heard it, very faint but slowly growing louder the creak of leather, the scrape of metal and another sound he couldnt place. they seemed to multiply until there was a quiet cacophony of sounds slowly building in the silent grey trees ahead. The deer thumped to the ground without complaint with the arrow still held to thorgrims cheek, though now it was trembling, then he saw them.
Soldiers, lots of them, still indistinct among the trees, dark outlines against the grey fog growing more numerous with each passing heartbeat. As they got nearer thorgrim could see strange armour, and large round shields, and as one soldier drew closer he held a huge sword like an axe slung over his sholder held in one hand, but something wasnt right, the arm holding that sword was too thin, and the soldier was smiling, they were all smiling. They halted as one and Thorgrim heard the beat of a horses hooves dampened by the moss and needles of the forest floor and the fog, but they quickly drew nearer and out of the fog came a rider on a towering black destrier with flaming red eyes. The rider pulled up the reins in front of Thorgrim and he felt all the heat ripped from his body. The rider threw back his dark cowl and flaming eyes like his mount fixed Thorgrim with piercing stare 'you will serve' the rider said, his words clouds of mist in the air. A pale arm reached out to thorgrim and he felt a crushing force inside his chest, he made a sharp intake of air to scream but he was already dead.
When Thorgrim opened his red eyes on the world he knew no pain, no fear and no hope.
A new evil has come to middle earth, far to the north an elf of dark origin has been indulging in unnatural practices, necromancy some would call it, unseen for millenia has a new master. He sees the war for the ring as his chance to destroy the elves and anyone else who gets in his way.
Gameplay, new faction starting as horde of undead warriors (barrow wights), i see tough skeleton swords, spears and archers and shock troops 2h axe or sword etc No horse, animals cant be brought back.
Very hardy troops, immune to arrows? slow moving though, led by necromancers as generals on redeyed horsies not undead just boosted. when they win a heroic victory they spawn a new army. when they take a settlement from the enemy they can recruit limited number of undead versions of elite faction units eg.Undead trolls, Undead fountain guard(omg im scaring myself now) making losing a settlement to the enemy an uneasy prospect (these undead versions could just have same model with red eyes and darker wash on textures).
When u defeat a special undead general u recieve a scroll of which there are 7 to defeat the Lord of the Dead u must have these scolls in your possession, these ancillary scrolls may be in the possession of a friendly general so they must be found and reclaimed before the final battle with the Lord of the Dead. Like an overall quest for your campaign and gives spies another use too.
Ok guys this is just an idea so can we just skip the Lore-nazism and remember new ideas can be fun too, although im sure this isnt the first time something like this has been brought up, i was thinking about it and thought it might breathe new (un)life into the world of middle earth. I would love to hear any other ideas from the community.
Let the flaming and tomato throwing commence.
