    Default Lord of the Dead

Thorgrim couldn't remember a fog like this, creeping out of the dark hills to the north engulfing everything in pale shades, the woods around him seemed to hold their breath, no breeze no sounds, nothing.
'Ok Thorgrim doesn't like this', he thought. As he checked his gear he decided the 6 rabbits he had snared were enough, 'ill get no deer in this fog anyway'.
Thorgrim padded off in search of the camp.
'I must have gotten turned around' he said to himself as he reached an empty glade where dingle his pony should have been. He quicky checked the moss on a stump in the middle of the glade and started off west, 'once i reach the stream i can head south to the ford and then ill be right'.
As he jogged through the trees he spotted something and froze, just ahead stood a young doe. Thorgrim slowly unslung his bow, thoughts of venison stew with carrots and parsnips making his mouth water, as he brought the arrow to his cheek he saw the deer more closely, the only movement from the beast was like it was quivering all over, its eyes were wild, the whites showing too much, but it was looking north not at thorgrim.
As he scanned pale shadows of trees through the fog beyond the deer he heard it, very faint but slowly growing louder the creak of leather, the scrape of metal and another sound he couldnt place. they seemed to multiply until there was a quiet cacophony of sounds slowly building in the silent grey trees ahead. The deer thumped to the ground without complaint with the arrow still held to thorgrims cheek, though now it was trembling, then he saw them.
Soldiers, lots of them, still indistinct among the trees, dark outlines against the grey fog growing more numerous with each passing heartbeat. As they got nearer thorgrim could see strange armour, and large round shields, and as one soldier drew closer he held a huge sword like an axe slung over his sholder held in one hand, but something wasnt right, the arm holding that sword was too thin, and the soldier was smiling, they were all smiling. They halted as one and Thorgrim heard the beat of a horses hooves dampened by the moss and needles of the forest floor and the fog, but they quickly drew nearer and out of the fog came a rider on a towering black destrier with flaming red eyes. The rider pulled up the reins in front of Thorgrim and he felt all the heat ripped from his body. The rider threw back his dark cowl and flaming eyes like his mount fixed Thorgrim with piercing stare 'you will serve' the rider said, his words clouds of mist in the air. A pale arm reached out to thorgrim and he felt a crushing force inside his chest, he made a sharp intake of air to scream but he was already dead.
When Thorgrim opened his red eyes on the world he knew no pain, no fear and no hope.

A new evil has come to middle earth, far to the north an elf of dark origin has been indulging in unnatural practices, necromancy some would call it, unseen for millenia has a new master. He sees the war for the ring as his chance to destroy the elves and anyone else who gets in his way.

Gameplay, new faction starting as horde of undead warriors (barrow wights), i see tough skeleton swords, spears and archers and shock troops 2h axe or sword etc No horse, animals cant be brought back.
Very hardy troops, immune to arrows? slow moving though, led by necromancers as generals on redeyed horsies not undead just boosted. when they win a heroic victory they spawn a new army. when they take a settlement from the enemy they can recruit limited number of undead versions of elite faction units eg.Undead trolls, Undead fountain guard(omg im scaring myself now) making losing a settlement to the enemy an uneasy prospect (these undead versions could just have same model with red eyes and darker wash on textures).
When u defeat a special undead general u recieve a scroll of which there are 7 to defeat the Lord of the Dead u must have these scolls in your possession, these ancillary scrolls may be in the possession of a friendly general so they must be found and reclaimed before the final battle with the Lord of the Dead. Like an overall quest for your campaign and gives spies another use too.

Ok guys this is just an idea so can we just skip the Lore-nazism and remember new ideas can be fun too, although im sure this isnt the first time something like this has been brought up, i was thinking about it and thought it might breathe new (un)life into the world of middle earth. I would love to hear any other ideas from the community.

Let the flaming and tomato throwing commence.

I for one think this is a cool idea! Adds a twist with the scrolls to just steam rolling with armies.

Let's be honest - ideas as such will never ever be included in TA:TW. We all know it. Still you can create submod to make them come true.
PS I'm kinda purist so am not interested but I know there are people here who like high fantasy things like evil elves, bear riders, skeletons etc.

Sounds like typical fantasy that would downgrade LOTR quality.

Adding an army of the death as an independent faction is against lore.

    But your idea?

When i read it aloud my LOTR books next to me began to smoulder and the ink became liquid again and flowed out of the pages like blood.

I hope you don`t even dream that such an faction could be added in the main mod.. Though, in an submod would be alright.

Well the idea was a bit of a daydream i had at work, i wanted to throw it out there to see if the community could take off their blinkers for a sec and maybe generate some cool new features which may or may not be included in the main or a submod, so if you can think of something u think might be interesting along the lines of lord of the dead feel free to input we could have like a 'discussion' or something. Well there was the Necromance (Sauron) mentioned in the hobit, plus there was the army of the dead in The Return of the King, so an undead army isn't too out of the question. However, even if you could find someone to mod this, it'd have to be a sub mod in order to prevent the "everything in this game must be exatly as in the book...EXACTLY, I don't care how much it removes from the games creativity IT MUST BE EXACTLY LIKE THE BOOKS" faction of this forum from committing ritulized suicide on themselves and their fellow family members.

    Does that one count ?

But ya, as much as I hate to agree with the forum proclaimed purists, I too would have to agree that if something like this were made it should be a submod. Although, maybe we are reaching the point where instead of changing the main game people should start consider making submods baised on the ideas that are strewn around the threads.

Technically adding the army of the dead in game would 1) be against lore and 2) they would be too powerful.

The only way the army of the dead can come out of their dens is if the true king of Gondor summons them.

And I am not sure that would be fair to have a race that can only be killed by one blade.....

You know just because it's powerful in real life (so to speak) doesn't mean it has to be ungodly powerful in the game as well. Just make them equivalent in power to the other factions characters and pretend this is a game that is designed so that you can have fun playing various factions against one another and not the word by word lore replay that it is.

Hi all and thanks for the replies

@ Earl of memory. EVERYTHING sounds like warcraft cos it is an amalgamation of every fantasy theme there is.

The problem i have with the Army of the Dead from the books is as stated above they are basically the ,I Win' key for the alliance and the fact they were ghostly apparitions always grated. Plus adding them as a faction wouldn't fit as they have their place in the lore and they do thier job and thats it.

My thought on the Lord of the Dead was he had come into possession of some ancient tome by which he could reanimate the dead giving the army a physical presence on the battlefield aswell as making them defeatable, lets say each general is a necromancer as the general holds these troops in their reanimated state and once he dies so do the troops they can just about last the battle but the dwindle away without a general a la a crusader army.

There are mention in the books of barrow wights, reanimated denizens of some crypt or other using the remains and weapons etc of its previous life to do mischief albeit close to their resting place, so its not completely outside the realms of possibility.

I know for a fact that if some old manuscript of good old John Ross R. Tolkien which outlined the lord of the dead was found by the estate even the die hards of this forum would go 'coool cant wait for the movie!' -Blasphemy i hear you cry!

I too used to post such Undead threads to no avail (would have loved to have seen a sub mod with them in), but thankfully Call of Warhammer mod has now come along - who do have a fantastic Undead faction called the Vampire Counts, which have excellent skeleton skins.

So for those craving this type of action I suggest checking out that mod, & leave the Lotr pureists (snobs) to coo over yet another elven faction of no fun or some such drivel.

If you bash "lore freaks" further; I will give you a reason to bash "Lore freaks".

Honestly, there is no way such an faction could and should be added in the main mod as long as it remains an tolkien mod.
