Well, I don't have random CTDs after any specific turns. I have "Unspecified Errors" whenever I kill these specific characters with their massive armies. I've played two campaigns, Ostermark and the Dwarfs.
While playing the Dwarfs, I promptly killed the Night Goblins besieging Karak Eight Peaks, and lured Grimgor and his heir into the valley between Eight Peaks and Karaz-a-Karak, to destroy them and their faction. All's good, right? I know if I hold my fortresses, I'll win.
Vardek Crom arrives at Karaz-a-Karak with his three stacks. Thankfully I had been amassing an army. My walls tire out his hellcannons. My crossbowmen cut down his Chaos Knights and two Chaos Champions. They run out of time, just like the Night Goblins, and I win! Great, huh? No. Every time I beat Crom the game errors. So, I got fed up with the Dwarfs and made an Ostermark Campaign.
After holding Bechafen, I sent the extra spawn armies down to Sylvania. I caught Mannfred inside a small town next to another full stack. I defeat both stacks, kill Mannfred, and take the town (I think. Mannfred's army was decimated). I get the "Vampire Count Excarnated" message, but then I get the error message. So.. I decide to move my army, wait a turn. Mannfred attacks -me-. I kill Mannfred. Again, an error, on a different battlefield.
What's going on? Am I not supposed to win?
