    Default Refreshing my memory

Well I downloaded RS 1.6 and I' am amazed by it. But as usual I like to customize my installs and games to fit my preferences. Months ago the .txt file preferences was the place I go to disable arrows, fog of war, auto save, banners and some other things now after I installed RS 1.6 I found 2 preference files in which I changed both files and saved but when I loaded up RS the changes did not take affect. Now can some one either direct me to a active thread that answers this or answer it here so it can be closed for I know these kind of thread happen all the time.

I feel embarrassed that I cannot remember how to make the changes take effect as I used to do this kind of stuff in my sleep.

    Thank you

are you using a new OS? Vista/Windows 7 perhaps? There's some roaming profile folder that may actually be holding the preferences file your RTW install is using.

If you are using Vista or 7 and have installed to 'c:\program files (x86)' then look in the 'virtual store / application data' area. Make sure that you've set your folder options to 'show hidden files and folders'. The other thing to remember is that the preferences.txt file is not created until the game is launched for the first time (I usually change something in the options menu).

You can run %appdata% in the run dialog box to get the start of the application data folder tree and then follow it down through logical(?) steps to the RTW folder.

    Yes I' a using Windows 7 Ultimate X86...
Well I typed %appdata% in the the run dialog and I could not find the RTW folder. ALl the files are set to be shown so basically the folder I'm looking for is not there but I have a feeling its right in front of me.

edit: I think I found it let me see if it works

EDIT AGAIN: Yes it worked. Awesome

Something odd has happened and I don't know why. I have Windows 7 ultimate x64 installed and I wanted to play a LAN with my friend but we were getting that issue of data not being identical. I realized my preference file was slightly altered so I went as usual to the %appdata% section and find the rome total war directory and chagne back the prefernece back to default. The problem is that the rtw folder is no longer there. It like DISAPPEARED and I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone know what happened?

And yes I have hidden folders to display.

Did you install it in Crogram Files? Not a good place to install it generally as all sorts of things happen when it's in there.

Yes, I installed it into my C drive in (Programs Files x86). Do you recommend for me to install RTW on another drive because I have a extra drive my E.

But that's odd because before I installed it into my C and everything was fine.

No install it to your C drive, just don't put it into Programs Files. I put mine in C/Roma Surrectum.

Yes. Anywhere else than on your desk and in any of the two Programs files (Programs files and Programs files x86) folders.

OK well I installed it into my E drive here is what the directory looks like.

    E:\Rome Total War

In that directory's preference folder I can change it manually and it will take affect. Which is great since now everything is back to default. But something else has come up. If I were to alter the preference file and use the Rome Total war shortcut it will not work. IT will load up then like crash but not a full crash it will just minimize then when I click on the game it will go to full screen then minimize again.

But If I were to use the .exe directly from E:\Rome Total War then the game will load normally. I find this VERY odd...
