Israel plans another wall along Egyptian border for "Jewish land"
Israeli PM approved plans to erect a wall along part of Israel's border with Egypt and install advanced surveillance equipment.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved plans on Sunday to erect a wall along part of Israel's border with Egypt and install advanced surveillance equipment.

"This is a strategic decision to secure Israel's Jewish and democratic character," Netanyahu said in a statement.

Egyptian police killed at least 17 migrants since May.

Thousands of African and other migrants have come to Israel through its porous border with Egypt over the last few years, fleeing conflict back home or searching for a better life in Israel.

Netanyahu said, "we cannot let tens of thousands of illegal workers infiltrate into Israel through the southern border and inundate our country with illegal aliens."

Israel's border with Egypt spans approximately 266 kilometers and the new wall is tipped to cost Israel more than 270 million US Dollars, taking two years to complete. The new wall will be accompanied by advanced security and monitoring installations.

Egyptian security sources in North Sinai said Israel had not informed the Egyptian authorities of its plan.

One security source said the project was an internal Israeli matter "which Egypt has nothing to do with as long as the fence is built on Israeli soil".

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Husam Zaki said the ministry would issue a statement on the plan on Monday.
    "Separation wall"

Israel is also building a "separation" wall in and around the occupied West Bank.

Intended to be 709 kilometers in length, Israel had completed 413 kilometers of the wall by June 2009, according to the United Nation's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The barrier, in reality a network of walls, fences, watchtowers and checkpoints, snakes through the interior of the West Bank, looping around Israeli settlements and fragmenting Palestinian communities.

International Criminal Court in the Hague ruled on 9 July 2004 that Israel's separation wall should be demolished in a decision that were all agreed by the judges by a margin of 14-1.

The verdict, requested by the UN's general assembly says "Israel's wall is illegal, it must be removed and adequate compensation paid," Israel has ignored this and pressed on with its construction.

The wall leaves some 80 percent of Jewish settlements on the Israeli side, leading the court to conclude that the route of the wall threatened to create "de facto annexation", with the wall itself described as severely impeding "the exercise by the Palestinian people of its right to self-determination".

Palestinians refer to the barrier as the "shame wall" and view it as nothing more than a land grab by Israel to help support and expand settlements in the West Bank.

The landmark ruling had rejected Israel arguments, saying "that the wall cannot be justified by security concerns, is detrimental to the rights of local Palestinians and violates international law.

The wall separates Israel from the Gaza Strip in the south and a network of razor-tipped and electronic fences stretches along its borders with Lebanon and Syria in the north.
Palestinians often say Israel has been working hard over the past years to Judaize the occupied lands and change its Islamic identity.

    "Iron wall"

Meanwhile, Egypt is building an underground barrier along its border with the Gaza Strip that has been already under years of Israel siege.

The government workers began placing steel tubes 50 centimetres in diameter and 20 metres long one above the other.

1.5 million Gazans live under heavy Israel siege and Egypt still insists on not to opening the only Gaza border crossing in a move condemned around the world in protests, leaving Gazans desperate to digging tunnels underground and risking their lives since 2007.

A group of international lawyers and human rights activists accuse Israel of committing "genocide" through its crippling blockade of the Strip.

    Looks like Jews like Walls.
    I just wonder this
Netanyahu believes that this strategic decision to ensure democratic and Jewish character of Israel.
If Democracy is also a plurality, will be very difficult to combine only the Jewish nature of this democracy of Israel. Moreover,it is.... Just see how they threat the Palestinians.
Thats how Israel lives with plurality of characters?

That is one of the curiosities of the Israeli state structure. It very much adheres to democratic principle, but only insofar as it doesn't compromise the officially Jewish character of the nation. Therefore you will never see the millions of Palestinians enfranchised as Israeli citizens for this would destroy the demographically precarious Jewish majority.

It is also what makes this a logical move for the Israeli government to make.

But seriously though. Something as simple as a double row fence would do and be a lot cheaper.

True, minefields would be far more cost effective.

Wait, Is both Egypt and Israel building walls?

Also according to the article the wall has been condemned since 2004 by the vast majority of Hague judges.

Yes, Egypt has their own walls, and is currently building more. More than a land grab by Israel, it is a matter of security for both Israel and Egypt.

These walls in particular, have nothing to with a land grab. This is about fencing in Hamas, because it has become clear that nobody will ever be safe from them. This is abundantly clear to Egypt as well.

This idea that the way forward is to reconcile Hamas and Fatah, has no basis in reality. The way forward is what is happening now. Support Fatah in the West Bank, grow legitimate and competent security forces that have changed the West Bank fundamentally, and march on Gaza. Remove Hamas from power, by force.

GAZA, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Hamas and other militant groups called on Egypt on Tuesday to stop building a steel wall along the Gaza border that could block tunnels through which goods and weapons are smuggled into the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

"Hamas sees the continued building of the wall as unjustified and it will bring catastrophe on the Palestinian people, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told a news conference, where the group and other factions urged Cairo to end the project.

Egyptian officials have said steel tubes were being placed in the ground at several points along the 14-km (8-mile)-long border, but they did not specify their purpose.

Palestinians fear a steel barrier, deep underground, would limit or end smuggling through hundreds of tunnels operating in defiance of a three-year-old Israeli-led blockade of the territory ruled by Hamas Islamists opposed to peace with Israel.

Last week, a Palestinian gunman fired at an Egyptian bulldozer at the border, causing damage but no injuries.

Egypt rushed reinforcements to the scene and Hamas assured Cairo it would prevent any further such incidents, officials said.

What I've been getting at is that things like fences or the intelligently suggested mine-fields don't actually solve the problem of illegal immigration. It's like putting a band-aid on AIDS, to use a rough analogy.

What needs to happen is more work with Mexico to stabilize the country and further its development so that Mexicans have less incentive to leave the country in the first place. A prosperous Mexico means less Mexican-Americans.

The first thing to go in a socialist is the sense of humor, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, it also involves taking oneself far to seriously, and thinking your opinions are really important

Secondly, how much more should the US do to make Mexico prosperous? Obviously a rich Mexico is better than a poor one but there is only so much one can do with another country. Billions of US dollars flow into mexico from the workers in el norte as it is right now.

First we put up a deterrent and then we solve the actual problem. The cost of a fence is far cheaper than the damage done every day.

Sure we should make immigration easier for them, but thats going to require a lot of effort to change and that takes time.

It's not the Mexican-Americans that I'm worried about, it's the Mexicans living in America.

I think the best thing to do would be to increase the penalties for hiring illegals to the point that it's simply not worth the risk. That and Kinky Freidman's "Five Mexican Generals" plan

That cow is already out of the barn, being neither party has the cajones to do it, and worse neither party would SURVIVE if they did, though Republicans have a realistic shot. Democrats would not win another election if they did that.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was a socialist seeing as how .. I'm not.. and I was also sitting here thinking illegal immigration was something to take seriously.

If I want to exercise my sense of humor, I'll watch some Family Guy or Robot Chicken or a stand-up. Not the murmurings of some wanna-be smartass on the Internet.
Secondly, how much more should the US do to make Mexico prosperous?
Obviously more than is happening right now. It might actually be amazing how much more result could be seen if the resources spent on building fences and other ineffectual means were put into solving the root problem. But oh no, that would require thinking too hard, and apparently that's the domain of socialists
Billions of US dollars flow into mexico from the workers in el norte as it is right now.
If that's true, then the job is made easier. The goal can be to have NGOs encourage that money to be put into the development of local small businesses and corporations. And then education. You know, things which have been successfully accomplished elsewhere in the world.
