Ok so I am just about to try out this mod. I am currently playing Stainless Steel 6.2 with the latest RR/RC, larger battles EDU ect. What do you guys recommend I install with TATW in terms of submods or add-ons? Also, what faction would you recommend? I play SS on H/VH. Thanks.

any tip we give might not be what YOU like, think about that....

in any case, since you have RR/RC already in SS, then i would recommend for this mod as well (dont know if it has support for 1.4, never used it)

other than that look yourself at the sub-mods, and see what you like...

if you like hard starts etc, gondor is the way, 2 war fronts, low income, 1 stack in campaing map if ur lucky, have fun!

Yeah Gondor is a good faction if you want a challenge. I'm currently involved i a war with Harad and making about 500 gold/turn on M/H and only have 2 stacks in the field. Another challenge is Dale. I've played on just about every difficulty combo there is and I still have huge problems every time I play as them (about a 0.75 stack in the field and a solid 0 gold/turn is standard for me). As for sub-mods I have no idea.

1.4 compatible rc/rr should be available in a matter of days so just keep an eye out in the submods sections.

Aye for submods id keep an eye out for RC/RR for sure but also if you want more factions then keep watch for Vale of Anduin and the Forgotten Realms submod which would add a total of 5 new factions and a few regions if I read right.

Also if you interested in keeping that Stainless steel feel then check out Divide and Conquer, its a WIP right now but the team thats making it plans to use all 31 faction slots as well as a other goodies but ill let you check that out if interested. Its the closest thing to Stainless Steel meeting Third Age, plus more scripted goodness I believe.

I find TATW has become quite excellent on it's own, partly thanks to the wonderful modders here paying attention to player input and the submod community. I highly recommend you play vanilla TATW before trying any mods.

I will tell you which factions I'd advise not to play first, or second: Eriador and Orcs of the Misty Mountains. Play these later on if you like.

Factions I would not play first, but might play on my second game would be Isengard and Gondor. They can be good but benefit from a general idea of what's going on.

With any faction, try to find some guides first and read them. Some of the factions have strategies that are critical, like choke-points with Gondor.

Out of curiosity, would my installation be ok if I keep SS installed? Or do I need to delete it?

They both install properly to separate folders AFAIK, I see no reason there should be any problem just installing them both.

    Stay away from Trolls!
Nothing frustrates you more than seeing 5-6 units of trolls against you on battlefield. And if you meet them on walls you might aswell tell your men to cut their own throats, saves everybody a good amount of time.

Whats the best way to kill Trolls? Also, I checked out some cool screen shots and people have huge armies. Is that normal for tatw or do I need a submod edu?

There's a subforum at the top of this forum, "Guides Resources and Art." It has neat and useful stuff like this thread on how to kill trolls effectively, or the map files also linked to from my sig.

Edit: Default size in TATW is huge. You don't need a submod for that.

The faction truly does not matter to me. The only thing that I may stand out to your attention is that this game is based on MILITARY. Do not go spending all your money on trade buildings as I do in Medieval. Here you spawn out units and once you run out of money attack the enemy. Then as your units go down, upkeep goes down, you get money, make more stacks and go conquer more.

This is pretty much the cycle used in creating this mod.

I think this summary on possible factions to start with is quit good.

If you play for the first time you should play one of the easier factions, to accustom yourself to the mod.

In my opinion the easiest factions are:

Mordor: A good starting position, good economy, good units.

Harad: A good starting position, economy needs a bit of work to work, units good but lightly armoured.

Rhun: A good starting position, economy great once you get mines, very good and diverse unit roster. Though, they have to fight the dwarves and dale at the same time.

If you don`t want to play with one of the easier factions, these factions offer some Challenge:

Dale: They have an good unit roster but have to fight against Rhun- Rhunic General bodyguards are an army on their own!

Isengard: They are surrounded by enemies.. Isengards Economy is good and their troops are cheap and effective, but with a bit of ill luck you might find yourself surrounded by Rohan and Eriador.

High elves: While quite easy, because they have good units and an secure starting position, they offer still some challenge because their economy sucks a bit.. And they can`t field as many units as other factions.

Silvan elves: They have good archers and with ambushes they can defend their kingdom quite effective.. But once heavy armoured units (Trolls..) appear they have some trouble.

These factions i woulnd`t play in my first campaign:

Gondor: I haven`t played Gondor in 1.4 but it seems to be a lot harder than in 1.3 to survive as Gondor.

Eriador: This faction sucks. Eriador is being redone- I would wait.

Rohan: If Sauron calls an Invasion on Rohan some players might find themselves in trouble. And while Rohan is good on the Battlefield, they suck during sieges.

Orcs of the Misty mountains: They are surrounded by enemies and their mountains are hard to defend.

Dwarves: They have good armoured troops.. But those are slow! Many players quit playing as the dwarves because chasing skirmishers is frustrating.
As for used submods, I definitely suggest to first play vanilla TATW. After trying a few campaigns you will have a better understanding what certain submods might/can add to the vanilla version.
