Voulgier - I have a problem with that unit. It tries to be an all-around unit, while it truly sucks at most tasks I give them. How do you use them to maximum efficiency?

IMO 'Spearwall' for units that don't have 'Very Long Spears' is useless. You don't want Voulgiers forming your main battle line. I use them as infantry flankers, much like shock infantry. I don't have more than 2 units of Voulgiers per army, set them up in 2nd line - 1 at each end. Once main battle-lines of infantry engage, I run the Voulgiers around and hit the flanks/rear of the enemy infantry. I don't even use the 'Spearwall' at all.
Basically, you want them beating on the backs of an enemy unit that is busy attacking your heavy infantry.
Vougliers are not that bad. They are good against armour, cavalry and they are cheap.
If I do use voulgiers, its either as fodder or to kill occupied enemy cavalry.
A HUGE fan of the Stainless Steel mod for m2 kingdoms. Thank you to all the modders!
Receive the enemies charge with spear wall on, as soon at the energy of the charge is disapated switch spear wall off and let them thrash away with their weapons.
They are useful because they will beat nearly all spearmen in the game, are decent against cavalry, you only really need to worry about pikemen and Feudal heavy infantry. I find they make up a lot of my Heavy troops, and do a good job, thats with RR/RC it might be different in normal SS 6.1

The only infantry I saw chewed up by Voulgier were Spearmen Seregants. Everything tougher cuts down Voulgier really fast.
They are quite usable in RR/RC. New stats and animations.
What new stats exactly? (BTW I do play the latest RR/RC, I never played vanilla SS)
Sorry for not stating it in the first post, I'm not talking about vanilla SS Voulgier, I'm talking about RR/RC ones.
I did some more testing, and this is what I think of the Voulgier now:
-good against infantry with low attack values
-in spear wall formation good against cavalry, they repel everything but the most heavy cavalry quite easily
-if you really want something done really good, don't send in Voulgier. Send in unhorsed knights or other heavy infantry.
I've always seen them as stepping stones to the halberdiers which come a bit later I think. They're good backbone infantry at a fairly cheap cost and I -think- are late professionals. Obviously the dismounted noble knights would do a better job of killing armoured troops but they're a bit more sparse in recruitment terms.
i need to get RR/RC please give me a patch to it that works TT
Voulgier best stat is their cost effienciency and availability. One on one they will loose many battles but when you think of price, upkeep and availability they are a nice unit in frances roster.
Upgrade their armor and they can take on most units, including pikemen, quite well. They murder cavalry in melee and do OK versus heavy opponents due to their AP attribute.
Voulgier are rather usefull on defence, as they can hold even feudal knights for a long time, with quite even loss. Comparing the prices, you'd be winning even at 2 for 1. Using them on offence is harder, make them progress and charge without pike formation activated, and once they have engaged, toggle back pike formation.
All in all, they're in every way better than equivalent infantry, barring nobles : there is no reason to recruit sergent spearmen once you've got them. Uhm, apart if you're facing mass shooters, in that case some frontline cheap shields might have some use.
Ten times more numerous, by night and backstabbing.

I used 4 of these units in France campaign to defend Winchester versus 2 stacks who siege my citadel there. England atack with classic army composition. The fight was not at walls keep it buy DFK, man-at-arms and longbowms, but at main gate forced by a ram. Received Heroic Victory, and a ratio of win loss of 20% versus 75%. These vulgiers crushed anyting tried to fight with them. Need to say was a small cavalry force of enemy cavalry, mu vulgiers got silver shields and I played in RR. I think are more effective than halebardiers in defence.
Yes Halberdiers have a different animation set that makes them push forward aggressively, they are great for assault and breaking into pike formations, but not so good for defense.
