Well, it depends, whether you will like RTW, or not.
AI is inferior when compared to Shogun, or Medieval. Especially on strategic map. Not very inferior, but still...
Historical period is very poorly depicted. In fact, this game is "historical" just like Xena or Hercules TV series. Or "300" movie.
But, game is intense, with very high fun factor. Multiplayer (battles) is pure fun.
Game looks good on screen. Even today graphic is nice.

    Why not Steam?

Well, because real strength of RTW is in game mods.
Game may be flawed, but mods are perfect. Some of them, i.e. Europa Barbarorum, Rome Total Realism, Invasio Barbarorum, LoTRTW, are just like whole new game.
Except multiplayer, i hardly play vanilla RTW since i installed Europa Barbarorum.

And Steam seriously limits any mod usage.

Furthermore, I believe that Rome must be destroyed.

first i suggest getting a disk from a store or amazon or something (im not sure where they still sell it sorry, i got my copy years ago)

i think this game is fun because

    1) i really like the time period and i think anyone else intrested in rome would have some fun with it.

    2) it is not graphics/computer intensive like empire but the graphics are still decent.

    3) the campagn is fun and can be challanging at the higher difficulties (unfortunitley the AI is not smart, but it really isnt in any other game so nothing new)

    4) there are alot of mods you can use if vanilla gets boring, i've heard the most about EB and RTR (although i dont use mods)

    i hope this helps some

Also STEAM is forcing you to a patch status you may not want maybe.
There are mods which require different versions of the patches and thus
steam is patching your game to the latest version you might not be able
to use some of them mods then.

I seriously suggest buying it! I Had ETW and enjoyed it. I remember friends telling me about Rome, and I actually just bought it out of the blue one day at Best Buy, actually only about two weeks ago! It was $20 for the gold edition that came with RTW and the Barbarian Invasion expansion. Its an awesome game, really fun, and not hard to lose yourself in! The fun thing about it is that you can actually compete against other Roman families for dominance in the world and eventually have to go after them for supremecy. Its great, the battles are amazingly fun, and I strongly reccomend it. And take it from me...dont get it on steam. I hate steam, and other than that, I have had problems with MTW on steam. M2TW worked on steam...after downloading and updating for almost 3 days. And after that long the Kingdoms expansion still wouldnt work. I broke down and bought the disk and made everything better, so when you buy it, do buy a hard copy and screw steam!

Hope my advice helped, and I hope you decide to buy the game!!

Definitely buy it, but not on Steam; otherwise you'll essentially cut off half of the experience by having little to no mod options.

Install mod with steam - yes, but i disagree with part "easily".
Furthermore, I believe that Rome must be destroyed.

i encourage you to buy RTW if you liked the other games. i have played STW, RTW MTW2 and ETW and of all those games i liked RTW best for the following reasons:
    1. RTW has better graphics than STW and you can zoom all the way in.
    2. its multiplayer far exceeds that of MTW2 and ETW, because it has more players than MTW2 on any given timezone, and unlike ETW it has a lobby to talk to other people in which any mp game needs.
    3. Unlike MTW2 and ETW the unit movement is fast and dynamic whereas a mtw2 unit will take at least 5 seconds to start moving, and unlike MTW2 cavalrymen are not recruited from retarded people and can attack in any direction instead of just a remote sideways arc (30 degrees from the side no matter what)
    4. The MP is great, but the SP elements suck. because of this hundreds of mods have been made to increase challenge, playability and historical accuracy, thus SP sucking is not a factor. Modded SP is great and MP is great as long as you don't cheat since people will hate you like you are a Muslim living in the Vatican during the crusades.
    5. what it lacks in 2010 graphics it makes up for in diversity. unlike ETW and MTW2 all of the factions ( except the four roman families) are highly different in their unit choices as well as their faction's colour..
    6. There is a vast array of clans of all kinds with their own characteristics which offers pretty much any kind of clan experience to any type of online gamer. Whether you are a Gandhi , A Bill Murray or a Hitler, Whether you want a good clan or a noobclan, there is one for you.

I highly encourage you to get the disk version instead of the Steam download version as well.

Sure they don't move as fast as the units in Rome, but they are not that slow.
