The big island in the British Isles is called Britannia*, so if you conquer Scotland and England (ahem, and Wales) I guess you can call yourself the Brits. At any rate, my faction leader got the title 'King of Britain' sitting in London soon afterwards.

This is not a universally American mistake.

What's more, the term is politicised in the British Isles (where British is seen as meaning 'English').

James VI/I would turn in his grave if he thought that his reinvention of the term British (meaning Welsh) to include people of England and Scotland (in order to encourage harmony between the two kingdoms... seeing that James was Scottish and king of both) had come to be so badly misunderstood in the modern period.

(for the history nerds here, King James also created the modern flag of the UK: the 'Union Jack' [Union James]; a combination of the Cross of St. George and St. Andrew. It was hated by the English Also.... Welsh is an 'English' word meaning 'slave'!!! Fact!)

By this action he also brought French culture to the British Isles, and caused the English language to move away from its Gothic antecedents (he also produced an interconnectivity with France that eventually led to the 100 Years War). Besides this endeavour, the Normans were busy conquering Sicily (hence the faction in MWII and SS), although they failed to capture Byzantium. The Normans' presence in the First Crusade did not lead to the most harmonious relations between the Crusaders and Byzantium... which had its own long shadows...
