    Thanks!

The best part being that the CPU and MOBO that let me unlock a 3.1ghz dual core into a 3.6ghz quad only cost me $220 total!

This is more of a technical thread so I've moved it to Empire: Total War Technical Help.

    • mobo = asus p5n-e sli (iirc)
    • cpu = intel e6550 overclocked to 2.5 iirc
    • gpu = 9800GT 512mb
    • psu = 800 (a bit to much but i dont care)
    • ram = 4gb ddr2
    • os = win7 64bit

Yeah its not a very good system, gonna buy a new one in a year or so.. if i got the money. But it can handle Empire on medium-high and thats good enough for me. Sometimes a bit of lag in single player but I recently started playing multiplayer and no lags there at all!

Also I underclocked my ram from 800 to 700, so it is in 1:1 ratio with cpu. I did this long ago and I forgot what this ratio meant, something with FSB i believe? Also if I have 3 1gb sticks in my mobo everything works okay, but when I put the 4th one in there's something wrong. My computer freezes on startup, already on biosscreen. When underclocked to 700mhz i can put the 4th in and everything is okay. I did not even know it was possible to manually over/underclock the mhz of ram, and I was kind of afraid the ramsticks would be broken within days but its been more than a year now and its still good

I've also been thinking of overclocking the gpu, but I don't really think it would make a difference as my whole system is a bit dated, and maybe the cpu/ram will bottleneck.

Oh and that mobo comes with a bios that is great for overclocking, at least in my opinion Do all mobo's come with good overclocking options in bios?

Many motherboards these days offer a variety of overclocking options in the BIOS though you'll still want to read reviews and, if possible, take a look at the manual online.

It is also important to make sure you have a CPU that will remain stable when overclocked. This is easy to achieve with unlocked multipliers, not sure about Intel but I know black edition CPU's from AMD have unlocked multipliers.

    Proper cooling is a must!

Here is an article talking about how my CPU and MOBO work together to achieve the impossible.
