    Default keeping formation

One thiing that bugs me is that when I maneuver to get closer to the enemy, I lose the classical formation with the archers in front etc. I would like to have a command that would restore the formation to the "classical" one, otherwise I have to pause the game and waste a lot of time rearranging the units.

After all, the general surely must have had a command to tell his units to get into their default positions...

Actually the command to allows to spread out the troops by pressing the right nouse button should put the units into the default positions, after all there is no case where one would want all of his units in onoe long line.

As Spartacus says if you group them all into one big group when you reposition them they will be in their original formation.

try moving by groups ( Ctrl 1 ..2) they will keep their formation while on the move if the maneuver is complex try alt clicking good for flanking and envelopment

I believe it's a tiny little bit trickier.

To group them is right but it's important how you do it.

Once you have them placed in the formation you want, select all the units you want
to belong to this formation and press 'g' or ctrl-1-9.

Do not afterwards use things like: shift-1-8 because that will screw up your original formation.
If you press shift-1 and you try to drag with right mouse button - there will be again the
stretching thingy where you can choose how thin/thick the lines of the units are.

Another tip, if you hold ALT when issuing a march order they will keep the same facing, useful if you want to move your forces sideways.

Will that also work when let's say, your fighting with one of your infantry units and you want to pull them back and you press the Alt button, will they backup while facing the enemy?

Because I always hated it when my units were engaged in combat and when I wanted to pull them out, they turn their backs and quite a lot get killed that way.

No, it's impossible for units to do that. I wish though.

Select the units you want to move, hold the CTRL button and hit right mouse button over the place you want to move them to. The units will march and keep the formation pretty well.
