That's how it's supposed to be. Extermination is wholesale death and destruction, so there is less loot afterwards.
Why are you exterminating and sacking?...
I think that there are 2 approaches in the game: the dread and all out path and the diplomatic / chivalric path.
Basically you can play both and both are very efficient.
Dread path:
- very high tax rate with sufficient garrison in the rich cities to maximize money input.
- exterminate or sack all settlements you capture (generally, i exterminate if the settlement don't show a green face - else i sack it). Once you take a settlement this way, you just need to drop one weak unit as a garrison. You can even destroy some buildings that you don't really need (smithy, catapult maker, stables etc) if you think this settlement is a minor one.
- execute all prisonners.
- don't care about alliances and ennemies. Everybody is your ennemy. You can maybe make one alliance with a neighboiur sharing the same religion but let a strong garrison nearby just in case of.
This way you get few money and you never get the latest units, BUT on the other hand you expand quick and fast and don't care about revolts. I played this way with Kwarezm and the result was great. Just ever allied with Egypt and we both conquered the world.
The chiv / diplomatic path:
- low tax rate everywhere.
- always free all prisonners.
- always occupy cities.
- try to make many alliances and plan to attack only 1 country at a time.
This is the "normal" way of playing for me, most of my games i do this and this work also very well, with a much slower expansion rate but your empire is strong and solid and you get all the latest units and tads of money.
You can't change this, I'm afraid. It's hard coded.
Chivalry all the way!![]()

You know, i used to think that exterminating gives more money than sacking! Ofc, i havent played M2TW in a year, so i guess i remember wrong!!
anyway, i understand how it goes!! thnx for quick and useful replies!!!!!!
may i ask something a bit irrelevant..? Is it my idea, or in stainless steel 6.2 there is no Kingdom of Leon & Castille in the Custom Battles...?![]()

Got it!! Thanks very very much guys!!!![]()
Yeah i always wondered how you got more money out of the outright slaughter of people.
I always just assumed there was a medieval death-camp scenario wherein absolutely anything of value was stripped brutally from my victims and then processed to fund the war effort... but i have a terribly dark sense of humor![]()
It is very easy: If you loot, only the people who try to protect eachother die (and those who protect the loot, of course). But if you exterminate, you burn everything down and take only what you can grab before fire forces you to leave. At least, this is how I had it in mind. It fits the things that happen:
Sack: A few people die, some buildings are un leveled
Exterminate: Maybe people die, almost all buildings are damaged.

I dont think you would burn the city down. that makes no sense. Rather, you go in and kill all the men, let your soldiers rape then kill the women and then order them to strip anything of value. Anything, meaning literally clearing out every hovel taking everything.
Setting fire to it afterward would not make sense. It implies that you believe you will lose the city soon, or something.
Besides, buildings aren't damaged in exterminations to my knowledge !
