    Default [Decision] Salvaging TWC's Past.

    The TWC Historical Society
    Proposed by Belisarius

The Curia recognizes that the history of TWC is a social experiment which could teach individuals valuable real life lessons in how different types of administration governed the TWC community. The Curia also recognizes that the sites history is being buried and should be preserved for later Civitates and staff members to read and appreciate.

Thus the Curia asks that the TWC’s Living History Forum be moved to accompany the Curia and Symposium in the Capitol. The forum is to be given to one Civitates, who will be chosen nomination and election to start a group with permissions in the forum, dedicated to salvaging and documenting as much of TWC’s history as possible. When the Head Historian resigns another election is carried out.

I was inspired by my work here - http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=322336 to maybe expand it into a project where all of you can find out how TWC became how great it is. I cannot do this alone and think this would be an interesting project for the Curia to form.

It could branch into Mods, TW, Common Community... anywhere.

    I hope you support.
Well, if I, Belisarius, the Black Prince, and you all agree on something, I really don't think there can be any further discussion.

Though you might want to consider a committee rather than a single person, since traditionally positions of this nature haven't garnered much interest and may amount to just more bookkeeping. It's also hard for one person to determine the relative significance of a certain occurrence. I'd also suggest the nature of the inclusion be limited to events rather than individual things of note. The Scriptorium already serves to archive threads of worth, and does a fairly good job of it.

This actually sounds like a scriptorium inside of the capitol. What about making it part of the scriptorium as one big library?

As someone who has pushed for the creation of a 'history of TWC' catalogue in the past, I think an idea like yours is swell. However, I think the forum would be better served in the Capitol. One possibility: The forum could be operated by the Librarian team, or by a joint effort of some librarians and some Curially-appointed citizens. That way we have a branch of Staff and members of the Curia working together towards a common goal.

only issue here is not all librarians are citizens, so wouldn't have suffient permissions

Not a problem. All we would have to do is create a Living History forum team, ala this thread, make sure all members of the team are citizens, and task them with the job.

Yes, that would indeed be an issue. But I'm sure we can find some way to work with or around it.

Hmmm? Since the subforum already exists, I think all that is required is a Curial decision to manage the archive. I would suggest that rather than create a new slot 'Head Historian' it would be better to mandate that the Chief Librarian be charged with maintaining the collection. Since the Chief Librarian is a citizen the permissions are not an issue. The Chief Librarian should also be allowed to name Librarians to manage the collection. Since this is within the confines of the Capital, such Librarians shall also be Citizens.

The Scriptorium is looking for great articles. Don't be bashful, we can help with the formatting and punctuation. I am only a pm away to you becoming a published author within the best archive of articles around.

The librarians role would not really fit the one of documenting TWC's history. The job wont just be documenting old threads but actually getting as much of the allowed objective truth out as possible. The team could be asking for the retrieval of threads which during a "certain thread moving mistake" ended up scattered in the "Hall of shame", Hex, the Tab and Alhambra. Obviously we would be asking permission and seeing if the information is safe. The reason to allow it to form its own team is simply so that those people actually involved can come in and directly work together to piece together what actually happened years ago. Example If Mimirswell and I were on it we could see about documenting the Old curia threads from when we were Pro Curators. Asterix Ian and Archer could be invited to write up, or give an account, of the time when TWC came very close to destruction. There wont be any badges or different colored names. As you noted the forum already exists, its very basic and the decision asks it be moved out to accompany the curia and symposium, like other "content publications" for exposure and because the History of this site is very important and can teach us all alot.

Added to all this the Historians will constantly be PMing letters of permission so that they dont reveal things people dont want.

The preservation of materials is the primary skill that Librarians learn. The Librarians are already capable of handling sensitive information. The tasks regarding permissions and seeking out threads in the far dusty recesses is a part of a Librarian's remit. Rather than create a new position for a fairly narrow purpose, I would like to see an existing staff organization working a bit closer to the Curia in a cooperative arrangement.

I am considering this as chief librarian, but I do not want to overwork my team. I also do not want the Scriptorium to be involved in site politics. This would also have to be approved by jim, the content staff admin. I personally would support the bill, but not for librarians. Perhaps Belisarius could fill his new badge instead.
